Arvid was a member of our yacht club in Edmonds, Washington. I got to know him during a two week cruise up the Fraser River in 2003 from Vancouver Canada to Harrison Hot Springs. I remember him as a real gentleman. He also knew a little about boats!

I first met Capt Lingaas when he was the First Officer of the MS Starward. Or should I say we met his cabin as we were using it for the voyage. He was on vacation at the time. My mother said, here lives a very cultured man. On his desk he had flower vases place with fresh flowers being put in them by the room steward daily. I, being a wise 12 year old, couldn't agree with my mother more and stated so. There hanging on the outside of the closet wall was Miss May 1969. Needless to say, my sister and I were relegated to the pilots cabin for the voyage. It was his ability to see the humor in everything that led him through some difficult times. It is a talent I wish I had.

He had a tremendous talent for telling and finding the humor in real life stories. It's incredible that 13 years have already passed. We miss him just the same.

Captain you were by far the best. I´ll never forget when you visited me in the hospital and reassured me that I would be rejoining the ship once the Dr. gave the all clear.
I think of you often.

We did not know Arvid very long since we only met him after he arrived in Lake Lure but he always made us feel that he was a dear friend. Arvid was a constant fixture on his deck or walking his "boys" Winston & Marley on the local roads. Our poodle Hanji always enjoyed playing with the "boys" while we chatted with Arvid. Other fond memories were dinners that included wonderful stories of Arvid's times at sea. He will be truly missed.

We will always remember our few happy hours together with Anna, Bob Marley, Winston & Guizmo in Paris last september.

Captain Lingaas. With great sadness I got the message about Arvid Lingaas' death. I have known Arvid since 1970 when we both were pioneers in the cruise industry. Arvid was a dear friend and he had my highest esteem about his splendid skill handling ships, passengers and crew. Arvid was a master of high dignity and knowledge and very often combined with the most refreshing sense of humor. I keep the fine memories about Arvid Lingaas as dear treasure in my mind.

Captain Lingaas. I have many photographs of our days with NCL. Kirsten and Kerry were babies.....I did the show with Donn and you came many times to see us. WE loved you . A perfect Movie Star Captain. You were the handsome smiling Captian , that the passengers wanted. WE will see you again one day....and maybe you will invite us to the Captains Table.

Arvid-
I am so fortunate to have shared a short, but most valued, friendship with you. I will always remember our boat trips, and walks around the island with "the boys" at Lake Lure. Such great times.

Arvid,
I only knew you for a short time but those times were meaningful and bright. I will never forget you relaxing on the deck with your wine and the babies. Our hearts break knowing that you will no longer be feeding those squirrels that Marley loved so much.

Dear Anna,
When news reached me early this week, I was paralyzed for a couple of days. Though, not unexpected, I had no idea it was so imminent. When I spoke to him on the phone, he sounded his usual self, and I could not tell from the conversation that he was ill, although he explained it to me.
I put Arvid at the top of the list of people I know, from any walk of life, and in the cruise industry, he was a star. He was a professional, a trustworthy man with a humorous mind and the ability to get both in and out of many difficult situations. I could talk for hours about the time we inspected the SS France, before it became the SS Norway. He leaves me with memories worthy of a book. He used to say he would write a book about all his experiences on board the ships, then he said, “on the other hand, I will probably make more money by not telling”. I enjoyed the time we had together, and especially the days he visited with us here in Tønsberg. We had marvelous weather and took our boat to an island for lunch and swimming. Arvid captained the boat in his usual style and he gave us the story of his family’s life and circumstances when he was about 20 years old and had left for the sea, but his family remained on this particular island in the Tønsberg archipelago.
When his family moved from the west coast of Norway, his mother and father found employment as keepers of a ship-owner’s island residence. This meant rowing the kids to the mainland for schooling as well as all other necessary transportation in the line of work.
I am enclosing a picture from this day.
It saddens us that we could not be present at the spreading of the ashes, but we join you in your sorrow.
Our condolences on your loss.
Best wishes

Anna, it was so sad to hear about Arvid. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I cannot begin to tell you how much we miss both of you. Our turn onto Charlotte Drive will never be the same. When we saw Arvid sitting on the deck and heard "the boys" barking for Princess, we knew we were home. Just think about all the birds and flying squirrels Arvid fed and how much they miss him!I remember the first time we met -- you and Arivd were returning from a cruise around the lake -- both of you looking like movie stars. You invited us over for a glass of wine and I was never so impressed. You even had orchids on the skewers! That was just the type of couple you were: classy, friendly, and ever so loving! It became a joke for Cal and me because if either of us was gone for more than 20 minutes, we knew the other was on your deck, enjoying a glass of wine and hearing a "Ole" joke! I know you will probably sell the Lake Lure house, but no one will ever replace you and Arvid. We always felt honored to say you were our neighbors and most of all our friends. Love, Cal, Mary and Princess

I wish to send my sincere thoughts and condolences to Arvid's family and friends. He was a very special person and friend to many. March 2008, the last time Karstein and I were in Miami, Anna and Arvid invited us to their beautiful home overlooking Govt Cut..the channel that they both cruised so many times. Arvid and Karstein enjoyed seeing each other again after a longtime. Arvid, so handsome and classy! such a professional yet so down to earth and approachable. Arvid and Karstein shared a laugh as they discovered both of their "big responsibilities " in retirement was Chief Dog Walker and they both enjoyed it sooo much! I am very sad he left us too soon. He was a kind, accomplished man loved by all. Arvid was part of the NCL family that I came to know when I married Capt.Karstein Hansen in 1978. He encouraged Karstein to work ashore in Ship Operations to allow him spend more time at home with his new family. Thank you Arvid. Give Karstein a Big Hug from me!

Arvid.
The picture in the obituary is eerie to us. We have one almost exactly like it. I took ours on the Bridge of the Zaandam when we traveled with you from Fort Lauderdale to Seattle. I think it was 2002. The position is the same, the braided cap and shoulder boards are gone, but the alert eyes and determined watchful expression with just a hint of a smile is identical. It has always been symbolic to us of a man that belonged at sea.
You are in a lot of our memories; on the docks at Elliot Bay, Christmas cruises on the Lantern and even those dark days after you lost Teri so soon after we lost Anne.
But the memories of you which will be cherished the most are of those weeks on the Zaandam. Cocktails at the Outstation, the stories you shared about yourself during quiet times in the Crows Nest and most of all the great respect we saw you receive from the crew, those many years after you had retired.
We miss you my friend. Wish we would have known about your illness so we could have said good-by.

We have very fond memories of cruising alongside Arvid in the San Juan Islands with our friends JoAnn and Ray. "Dining on his boat with a Sunset backdrop, and Arvid humor, made for the end to a perfect day of cruising. It was such a joy to see his wonderful smile and his adored wife Terri, at his side. We, in the Northwest, have lost a very special friend.

I remember Arvid vividly from way back in 1978 - the best-ever NCL cruise office days. He was a magnetic personality, a happy spirit & a great boss. Years later, during a vacation in Seattle, my family visited him and sailed around the Bay with him on his little boat, finding him as always, strong Norsk survivor of life as it unfolded.........Arvid will always represent to me "An Officer and a Gentleman". Sincere condolences to his dear ones left behind. We will all miss his super-smiling, fun-loving presence and vitality.

My most heartfelt sympathies to Anna and all the family, as well as his many dear friends.
While I'm deeply saddened to learn of his passing, that his suffering is over is of some comfort. He touched many lives and hearts with his caring nature and yes, endless repetoire of jokes and stories. Relished, if even at times perhaps embellished.
I was fortunate to have worked with him at NCL. The perfect boss, though never "bossy".
You'll be missed, Captain...and thought of fondly always.
I won't think of this as your final journey, but as the one where calm seas and sunny skies are guaranteed.
God speed...

Arvid’s passing has left a hole in our family and a hole in my heart. He was my brother-in-law and beloved friend. His smile was the best sort of therapy, and he gave superlative hugs, even after the cancer made it painful for him to do so. It was sad beyond imagining to watch him die, but he remained stoic and brave and determined to make it easier for all those who cared for him. It was a great joy to know him and to love him, and when I’ve finally quit crying, I’ll always think of him with smile.

We have so many fond memories of the years we shared with him and his beloved wife, Terri. My deepest condolences to Anna and Arvid’s Family.
I had the great pleasure of knowing Arvid for many, many years. We first met as young men when we both served in the Norwegian Navy.
Seven years later we met again on NCL’s “Starward” and our friendship continued until his passing.
Arvid was such an unbelievable man….he was liked by all who had the joy of knowing him. What stands out most in my mind about Arvid was his professionalism, wit and mostly his intelligence as it allowed him to always be in control of any situation.
The most recent memory of Arvid and I was two months ago when he invited me to join him on his cabin cruiser “Starward” for a mini cruise around the Port of Miami and the Miami River. Even in the mist of uncertainty he remained stoic and never lost his sense of humor.
Arvid, you will be greatly missed and even though we did not see each other often, you will always remain in my thoughts and in the pedestal that you deserve.
Wishing you smooth sailing my friend!!!

Arvid was like a brother to me. During the seven years he was with my sister Terri he brought joy to our whole family. He always went out of his way to include Terri's family in his adventures. I will never forget the great times we had on his boat cruising the Sound. He was "Uncle Arvid to my children. We would not have the life we now have if we had not met him. We owe him so much for everything he did for us. Terri's untimely death of cancer brought to an end a wonderful era and changed all our lives forever. But we will never forget Arvid's sense of humor and the extraordinary adventures we had when we all lived in Seattle. The Klaus family will be holding a intimate gathering in Slate Creek Idaho tomorrow. We will raise a glass to the memory of our lost brother. Carmen, Mike, Vanessa and Becky Klaus will always love you Arvid...safe journey dearest friend.

To Anna and family,
We send our sincere condolences to all of you on the passing of Capt Arvid Lingaas. To me growing up in Miami during the early days of the cruise business, he was like the older brother I never had. To my father, he was a trusted associate who was always able to see the humorous side of a situation even if no-one else could. While we will miss him we will always remember the stories he shared. For every one of the stories he shared with us, I am sure there were many that he wisely did not.
Smooth sailing Arvid,

I first met Captain Arvid Lingaas at the NCL National Sales Meeting held in Banff Springs in December of 1979.Arvid was navigating/racing a wheelchair around the corridors with NCL employees that suffered ski injuries. It was all in fun. I subsequently sailed with the Captain on seminars at sea and sales meetings. Avid epitomized the professional Norwegian sea captain. He will always live in my memory. Such very sad news. I sailed with him on the Starward and I remember so well young ladies come and ask me if he was married :) I told them, that I forgot to ask him. But the word that suits him best is "fairness" . wether you were a diswasher or top man/woman - that is what I remember best. I feel so very sad for his family - must be so stange to be without him. He always appeared so strong and healthy. Farvel Arvid . So glad I got to know you. Hilsen Ingrid
