BENNIE BERMAN Obituary

BERMAN, BENNIE M.D., December 11, 1922 June 11, 2010 Bennie Berman was born to Rose and Rabbi Jacob Berman of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Bennie Berman was in his urological training (residency) at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, when a volunteer walked in with the patient about whom Dr. Berman was presenting a case study. He proceeded to call all of the floors in the hospital to get her name, Toby Opolinsky; it was truly love at first sight. Four months later, the two married and were together over 51 years. For 14 years they lived together in Toronto, Canada, where they had three children and where Dr. Berman had a thriving urological practice. In Canada, he was well respected and loved by all the staff and patients alike. (He still gets a holiday card from his former nurse after 35 years.) In 1970, Dr. Bennie Bermans in-laws moved to Florida. He was very close to them, so, at age 50, he retook his medical boards and received his license to practice medicine in the United States. Once in South Florida, he was quickly recognized as an expert in his field and lovingly referred to himself as The Biggest Urologist in South Florida. In 2002, at the age of 80, Dr. Berman retired to spend more time with his family. For the last 10 years he has attended the Lifelong Learning Institute for Retirees at Nova Southeastern University. He was an avid student, sharing his own stories and keeping students and faculty alike in awe with his many tales and shared life experiences. Predeceased by his parents, Rose and Jacob Berman and his dear brother, Alfred, of Toronto, his in-laws, Rhoda and David Opolinsky, and close relatives Pauline and Sidney Karten. Bennie Berman is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Dr. Toby Berman, children Dr. Ava (Dr. Ira) Kotch, Dr. Frances Berman (Howard) Goodsite, Jac (Ali) Berman, and seven loving grandchildren, Russell and Rori Kotch, Alexandra and Daniel Goodiste, and Julie, David, and Stephanie Berman. He is also survived by his loving sisters, Sylvia Berman Siegel and Eve Goldstein. We give special thanks to his caretaker, Delmira Carridice, who we now consider a member of our family. She cared for him up until he took his last breath. He was a valued and proud member of Temple Dor Dorim and had a very close relationship with Rabbi Lipson. Any donations should be made to Temple Dor Dorim in his memory. Services will be held on Sunday, June 13th, at 2pm at Temple Dor Dorim, located at 2360 Glades Circle in Weston, followed immediately by internment at Star of David, located at 7701 Bailey Road in North Lauderdale. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed. View this Guest Book at www. MiamiHerald.com/obituaries.
