Col. Thomson Obituary

Col. John "Jack" Thomson
September 9, 1931 - March 24, 2023
Coral Gables, Florida - Jack Thomson was a true gentleman, and his kind and compassionate nature touched the lives of all who knew him. As a veteran of the Korean War, Col. Thomson dedicated his life to serving his country and protecting the freedoms we all cherish. He was a passionate supporter of the military community and in 2018 was inducted into the Florida Veterans' Hall of Fame.
Married for 70 years, Jack was always supportive of his wife, Dorothy's love for public service as the first and only female mayor of Coral Gables. Jack was actively involved in organizations such as the Junior Orange Bowl, Kiwanis, and the Army-Navy Club of Coral Gables. He served as president of those organizations, as well as the Miami Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He graduated from the University of Miami School of Law and was a member of the prestigious Iron Arrow Society.
Jack has been a member of Granada Church since 1950, serving as an Elder and Chairman of the Board of Granada Day School.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, civic leader, church elder, private pilot, boater, career soldier, attorney and patriot - Col. Thomson was a pillar of the community and the Thomson family patriarch.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, April 2, at 4 pm. Granada Church, 950 University Drive. Reception to follow.

I always considered Jack one of my best mentors. Having an office directly across the hall from him made it the best office ever. He always had encouraging words and great recommendations for advancing my career. It was his influence that got me involved in the Junior Orange Bowl Committee where I met many great people doing great things for great reasons. You will be dearly missed. I know you have place in heaven.

Dorothy, Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
Jack was truly a remarkable man. He was a career citizen-soldier, a senior military officer. He was a successful attorney and businessman, airplane pilot, it seems he could achieve any goal he pursued.
Few men could measure up to Jack. He will be missed!

Dorothy, Rob & family, You're husband & father was there for my family at an unbearably difficult time,(my brother's untimely death), when it really counted. My brother & I also thoroughly enjoyed initially meeting most of you, volunteering for your victorious mayoral campaign in '85. And I'll always fondly remember Mr. Thomson's graciousness taking time in his office & lunch in the Gables to help assist me with my business years later. I can see he helped many. But he was amazing at making individual people feel special.
