David Fink Obituary

FINK, DAVID STUART, 59, died at home Saturday, April 8. He leaves his dear wife, Sylvia, and three children, Rebecca, Daniel, and Jenny, as well as grieving family members including his mother, Ruth Fink; sister Judith Harris and her husband Alan Lipson, and niece Molly and nephew Adam; and brother Paul Fink and his wife Beth Gordet, and niece Adrea and nephew Jacob; also including his cherished mother- and father-in-law, Esther and Joseph Grossbard, and brother-in-law Alan Grossbard. David was a skilled and caring physician to his many patients, and was highly esteemed by his colleagues of many years' practice in Miami Beach. David was a devoted and active member of Temple Beth Shalom. His untimely and sudden death leaves a void in our community, as well as in his circle of friends and beloved family. The services will be at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 1920 Alton Road, Miami Beach, on Tuesday, April 11, at 12:30 p.m. To visit this Guest Book Online, go to www.herald.com/obituaries.

Even though it has been 18 years since he has been gone, I will never forget Dr. Fink. He was a special person who impacted many people´s lives. I will always miss his great conversations at work. He will always be remembered!

There are people who make an impact in us for the rest of our lives and Dr. Fink was such a person to me. I loved his candid openness when we talked for hours while during procedures. He had such knowledge on so many topics, was non-Judgmental, and would help people selfishly. I worked with him as one of his nurses for many years and was privileged to know him.

I cant believe it has been 14 years since we lost Dr. Fink. I am a nurse that worked with him at My Sinai almost daily. I still think of him and remember what a unique and interesting man he was. He touched many peoples lives at work with his honesty and kindness, he will never be forgotten.

Our hearts go out to Dr. Fink's wife, children, mother, siblings, in-laws, employees, colleagues, friends and patients.

My husband (Willie Cone) and I just returned from a long trip and were deeply saddened to hear the news about Dr. Fink. We both thought he was a great Doctor and a caring and compassionate man.

We'd only been his patients for six years but we knew from the start he was a "spoiler". By that I mean, once you went to him you didn't want to go to anyone but him!

Fortunately I told him so during our last appointment (just days before we left for Europe and, it turned out, just weeks before he would pass away). He smiled a gentle smile, said "thank you" ever so softly and promptly changed the subject.

What a lovely man he was! No doubt this kind and decent soul touched many lives and will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.

With deepest sympathy,

I am another one of Dave's friends from Cass Tech, and I also have had no contact with him since that time. I remember well our first class together, which was freshman English from Mrs. Peterson. As I recall Dave pointed out the redundancy of 'various and sundry' when she used the term, and Mrs. P. had to agree with him! Dave looked at life uniquely and with humor. He will clearly be missed.

May 2, 2006

I knew David extremely well in high school. We were friends, ran in the same group, rode the bus (1 hour each way!) together every day and "hung out" on the weekend. We were among the small group of Jewish kids who went to Cass Tech

and that, also, gave us a special bond. I will always remember David's laugh - it was large and loud and from deep inside him. He also had this shock of red hair that kept falling into his face and he was forever trying to keep back off his forehead. He had a rapier wit, a sense of humor that drew you in, and a warmth and a kindness that you knew was behind everything. David is one person I have tried to "google" for years and also one of the very few that I really wanted to see again at our reunion this June. I am saddened by the death of this man who must have been an incredible doctor, but whom I knew as a lovely boy, the best of all that there was in everyone. Please accept my condolences. The world has lost someone whose memory remains very strongly in my heart. If you have any current photos of David, I would love to see them, if you feel up to it. My best to all of you - what a wonderful husband and father he must have been!

We were sad to hear of Dave's passing. We both were classmates of his at Cass as well as U of M. Although we have not seen him for many years, many fabulous high school memories re-surfaced after hearing the sad news. Bittersweet in that it takes this type of sad event to bring back all of the good times. You were one of the good guys, Dave......and you will be missed.

April 27, 2006

I am terribbly saddened to hear this news. David was truly one of a kind - a unique combination of humor, intelligence, dedication, and good will.

I knew him well in high school and unversity, lost track of him after that, but never forgot him. When my mind wandered back to those years, his smiling face and ready wit were always waiting for me - crystal clear in my memory. He will always be there for me and for his many, many other friends who loved him dearly.

My sincere condolences to David's family. Words cannot express the sense of loss that I am sure you are feeling. All of our best wishes are with you.

April 25, 2006

Dear Sylvia and family;

We were away for passover, and returned to hear the sad news. We always had great respect for David as a kind, caring, and particularly thoughtful physician. His patients loved him, and relied on him for excellent advice. We also had occasion to ask his opinion, and were so thankful for the time, patience and full attention he gave to the problems of a patient who lived far away, whom he would never meet. We also remember David as a wonderful, proud loving father, husband and son. There are no words to ease your pain, we just pray that G-d should give you strength to bear the sadness. May He comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

April 22, 2006

Dear David, my friend, I miss you.

Se que estas en el cielo, rodeado de ángeles, y practicando tu español.

It was such a privilege to have you among my friends, to have worked with you and to have shared with you so many moments, as brief as a hello a nurse’s station, and as personal as you being my gastroenterologist.

You were solid! At all times available, constantly prepared, all the time keen to offer advice in our complex cases and not ever with “no” for an answer. Proud of your children, and lovingly speaking of your family, like when you told me about that night, after Sabbath supper, when you had to use an umbrella to walk your mom to the car because it rained so unseasonably hard; or your memories of the trip to “Stingray City” with your daughter, and how she was a bit afraid, but you all still had a fun time; or that time when Idania and I brought you your favorite chocolate chip bunt cake from Epicure’s; or that time when we celebrated Amanda’s first birthday, I have the picture of you and your wife holding her, a cool February night, a warm David Fink smile.

I remember these times, I reflect on you, and this brings, not a tear to my eye, but a grin to my face, and that smile mirrors yours.

I love you David.

Te quiero mi amigo.

I was shocked to hear of Davids death. I was a classmate at Cass Tech H.S. from 1961 to 1965. I am not suprised at the at the impact he made in his community and in his profession. Even when he was a H.S. freshman it was clear that he was a special person. I would like to offer my condolences to his family and friends. I am truly sorry for your loss.

To the Family of Dr. Fink, I am very sorry for your loss. Please accept my deepest sympathy. I worked with Dr. Fink in Mt. Sinai Endoscopy Department for the past four years. Although it is hard to work with him because his schedule is usually hectic, I enjoy working with him because he is a brilliant man. He can talk about any topic that comes to mind. He is a wealth of knowledge and I love to pick his brain on different subjects. One thing for sure, he values his family. He loves to talk about his family and the fun stuff they did and the time he spent with his kids. I will never forget what he said to us, "If I am not seeing patients or I am not spending time with my family, then it is a waste of my time!" I will surely miss working with him. May God bless you all through this difficult time.

We want to add our names to the long list of patients and friends who remember this good doctor with such love. Our acquaintance with him is at a greater distance, coming primarily from the accounts of his life given to us by his parents-in-law, Esther and Joe Grosbard. They have described for us how their lives were touched over the years by his kindness and his thoughtful care of them. They and all the rest of his family certainly deserve the sympathy and outpouring of admiration from so many friends and patients. His was certainly a life well lived to have left so grand a trail of affectionate memory behind.

Bonnie Bowne-Peters

April 17, 2006

I had the distinct privilege of knowing and working with Dr. Fink at St. Francis Hospital. Upon hearing of his death from a friend, my immediate recollection was that of a true gentleman and a talented physician. He was always the same - calm and collected, and so very kind to everyone. His patients loved him. As a nurse, I am confident that all of my peers who knew him will echo my claim that he was truly a "nurse's doctor". My deepest sympathy to his family.

I went to Cass Tech High and U of Michigan with David. We "hung out" from time to time....from the banks of the Washtenaw to the Cedars of Lebanon. David had a wonderful way of celebrating life with wisdom, compassion and genuine interest. And more, he had a way of making those around him feel included in the celebration.

I was a friend of David's at Cass Tech in Detroit, and at Michigan. We lost touch later on, but I've thought of David often. We all always thought he'd do great things, and that certainly seems to be the case from reading this guest book. It was an honor to have known him.

Gary Lazar

April 14, 2006

I have great memories of Dave from high school. The interjection of his sense of humor, amazing intelligence and wit into some of the most boring classes helped make them bearable. Although we lost touch after graduation, I still think of him fondly and will always be grateful that it was because his hair was so much redder than mine that I was finally able to lose the nickname "Red".

The sad news from miami has reached all the way to Hawaii. Pat and I offer our sympathies to all of Daves family. He was always one of the nicest, smartest guys in the old neighborhood in Detroit, and its

To The Family of David and devoted Staff in his office:

I was privileged to have known David since 1981, as his patient and also his neighbor on La Gorce Island. He was the only doctor I trusted to perform the necessary endoscopy procedures from 1982 until last month when I returned to Miami exclusively for his medical expertise.

David represented the true definition of the Hippocratic Oath. His professional skills were surpassed only by his integrity and compassion for each of his patients. His untimely passing is a tragedy to the entire community.

Buddy and I send our love and prayers to you, his family.

What a shock! I knew David from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, and have hoped to be in touch with him for many years. I have many fond and interesting memories of him from those formative years. We actually won a Lindy contest at Sha'rey Zedek when we were in about 7th grade. I never forgot him, and after reading all these entries, he grew up to touch so many lives. Condolences to his wife and children, you must have many wonderful memories of this special human being.

It was with great sadness that I learned yesterday of Dave's passing. Dave was one of the most popular guys at Cass Tech High School in Detroit; he was well-liked by virtually everyone. He was known for his strong leadership skills and he was likely the most articulate in our class. May his spirit live on in all of us whose lives were touched by his engaging sense of humor and his smile.

Dear Fink Family,

While I did not get to know Dr. Fink as well as I did the rest of you, through my encounters with you I got to know of him. His spirit shines through you and I suspect will continue to shine as the memories that you shared together live on. May you find comfort and pride in knowing that Dr. Fink left this earth much better than he found it. One cannot ask for more from a human being than to serve his/her community to the best of his/her abilities. From the testimonies I have read from his patients and colleagues, one can only see the positive influence Dr. Fink was to those who surrounded him. I send all my heartfelt condolences to you and your extended family.

In thinking of the history of Passover, a time to celebrate the freeing of the Jewish slaves in Egypt, Dr. Fink's passing seems to be another type of freeing. He has been freed of the physical world, in order to join the ancestors, who can now jointly stand guard and protect you all. There is no doubt in my mind that Dr. Fink will be handsomely rewarded in the afterlife.

As is customary to say in celebrations - L'Chaim! To life! In this case, - L'Chaim! To the life of an amazing father, son, brother, doctor, and most of all, human being.

"May the Lord comfort you with all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem."

Supporting you in your time of need,

Dear Fink Family, I am very sorry about your loss, it will be a loss for everyone that knew him. I am a nurse that worked with Dr Fink at Mt Sinai for two years. We worked together on a very frequent basis. As you know he was a very hard working man and the nurse that worked with him worked just as hard. It did not matter to me how hard I had to work because it was such a pleasure to work with him. He was a down to earth, open minded, knowledgable, and kind person. Every one loved to talk to him and many of the staff members came to him for all kinds of advise. He was nonjudgemental, generous with his time and would give his complete attention to one's concern's. He was a devoted Doctor that did not care if a patient had monetary means, he just wanted to heal. I do not think of him as a coworker but as a friend and I will never forget him. I will miss talking and working with him. He was a truly admirable person. May God help you through this time.

To the Family of Dr. Fink,

It was a great shock to learn of the passing of my special doctor. I was at Mt. Sinai yesterday to have surgery on my wrist. I called a young lady(This young lady introduced me to Dr. Fink) in G.I. to let her know I was there and she told me the news - I cried. My doctor had a special relationship with all his patients, and for that reason for over 15 years I loved him. Even though I have never met the family, it seems that I do know some of you because we'd always talk about those on the pictures. I will miss him, but will keep him in my heart. Dear Mrs Fink and Family,

DR.David Stuart Fink was one of the most caring, finest physicians I have known. He has been my doctor for 28 years and has cared for me and my Mom,who has passed just recently.

Dr. Fink has saved both of our lives over and over again.

My only comfort after my Mothers death was that I had a wonderful physician who truly cared and would continue to take care of me now that Mom was gone.

His devotion to all cannot be measured.Time will pass and sorrow will fade but precious memories of this great man will remain always.

To Dr. Fink's Family,

I too first worked with Dr. Fink at the former St Francis Hospital over 25 years ago. He would always call me as the Evening Nursing Supervisor to "add on" cases for the morning. And, he was always readily available to see patients in our Emergency Room at night. I remember one evening when he asked me to assist hime with an emergency procedure in the ER. I told him, "Dr Fink, I've never assisted with this procedure before." He merely said, "Carol, I'll talk you through it & we will get through it together." I learned a lot from him that night as he was indeed a great teacher.

After St Francis Hospital closed & our nursing staff was transferred to Miami Heart Institute, Dr. Fink used to care for so many "mentally challenged" patients. He treated each & every one of them with kindness & general compassion.

We nurses will miss him greatly. He was one of "the good guys"!

May he rest in peace.

My deepest & most heart-felt sympathy to Dr.Finks' family. I had the pleasure to have worked with him at Mount Sinai G.I from 1995-97 as a nurse, & I'll miss his wit & wonderful sense of humor.

And even though it's been years since we've worked together, whenever we run into each other, our conversations were always memorable & warm. Dr.Fink, you will truly be missed.

My sincere and deepest sympathy to Dr. Fink's family. He was my personal physician for twenty-eight years, and I loved and respected him. He also saved my fathers' life which gave him many happy healthy years. One of my regrets was leaving his care when I moved from Miami Beach. I speak and think of him often. He will be sorely missed.

To the family of David Stuart Fink: It was with great shock and sadness that I read this morning of the oh, so untimely passing of Dr. Fink! I am sure that I am only one of many who share warm and appreciative memories of this lovely man. Dr. Fink looked after both my and my late husband's health needs for many years. In early 2004 he was one of the many physicians whom I believe saved my life. His medical skills were clearly evident and were exceeded only by his compassion and empathy, both of which he exhibited in abundance. I have always looked for his red hair under the yarmulke at High Holiday services at Temple Beth Sholom and I shall miss seeing that in the future. My deep, deep condolences on the loss of a life well lived!

Most sincerely,

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.
