David Mermelstein Obituary

David Mermelstein
December 21, 1928 - July 6, 2021
Miami, Florida - David Mermelstein was born in Kevjazd, Czechoslovakia, on December 21, 1928, to Martin and Helen (Herskowitz) Mermelstein. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 92, on July 6, 2021. He is survived by his wife and love of 70 years, Irene (Markovic), daughter Helene (Joe) Davis, son Michael (Lisa) Mermelstein, daughter Debbi Mermelstein, grandchildren Jenna (Mike) Fox, Lindsay Davis, Brian Davis, and his great grandson, Eli Fox.
David was the only member of his family to have survived the Holocaust. He devoted his life to serving the South Florida Jewish Community, assuming leadership roles in many organizations, too numerous to name, some of which included the Holocaust Survivors of Miami-Dade, the Holocaust Survivors Foundation, U.S.A., Jewish Community Services, Jewish Family Services, the Holocaust Documentation and Education Center, The Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, as well as the Friends of the March of the Living and Greater Miami Jewish Federation. David was passionate about educating our children about the Holocaust. He regularly spoke to students at many elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as private schools throughout Miami-Dade County. He participated in special/mentor programs at Miami-Dade College and the University of Miami as well.
David was beloved by all who knew him, was an inspiration to all who heard his story, and will be greatly missed by all who love him. Donations in his memory may be made to the Israeli Defense Fund. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo Kendall (5900 SW 77th Avenue). Mount Nebo requires masks and social distancing. I always looked forward to Mr. Mermelstein´s visits to our office to see Michael. I had heard so many of his experiences about his yearly trek but just loved to see how happy he was to be visiting his son. We always chatted briefly and he was truly such a very special man. I know that he created a beautiful, loving family with his lovely wife. May his memories give all of you the strength to continue his legacy. Claire and Family

It was my distinct pleasure knowing David and his beautiful Irene. We met through JFS, later JCS, where he and Joe Sachs worked tirelessly to encourage the Claims Conference to provide more for his beloved survivors. He spent hours recounting his Holocaust experiences to me and the case workers. I was honored to be in his company and appreciated his smile, good humor, and knowing about his history. I will remember him always. May his memory be for a blessing.

David had a sendoff befitting the king that he was. A man that turned such devastation into a lifetime of good deeds and loving kindness. David served as a shining example of how to live and how to love, to so many people, especially to me. I will miss our long talks, our lunches and are many laughs together. A true menche who I will always refer to as, " my boyfriend ".

David shared his story with our students at MDC for many years and was a blessing to all who had the opportunity to learn from him. He also came to my daughter´s elementary school, and later, her middle school at her request. I am eternally grateful for the time I spent with David. I was always amazed to see how much goodness and joy he spread in a world that had taken so much from him. May his memory continue to be a blessing.

Dexter and I were blessed to call David Mermelstein an amigo.
I worked for years with David and other Holocaust survivors to get justice from international insurance companies that long denied them their day in court.
In David´s name, the struggle continues.
