Am so sorry to hear about Dr. Stuart. We met in 1980, when he hired me as one of the History Department´s teaching assistants from 1980-1982.
Dr. Stuart was so smart, and one of the best scholars I´ve ever had the pleasure to meet. His enthusiasm was contagious, and his students and my fellow TA´s simply adored him. RIP, dear Dr. Stuart.

I was a history major at the U back in 1971-72. I had the pleasure of taking 2 courses with Professor Stuart, who was a fabulous lecturer. One of my most memorable teachers. He taught my class a lesson that resonated with me. Just because a book is assigned, students should not blindly accept the author's assertions. Prof Stuart taught us to always, ALWAYS ask questions. His course in African history was famous. A grateful student's family paid for him to visit the continent the summer before I took his course. He was a wealth of knowledge and splendid anecdotes. Still remember his lectures about the Nuer people of the Sudan and the Xhosa of South Africa!
