Miami, Florida - Fred Diamond passed away peacefully on May 15th at the age of 90 surrounded by the love of his family.
During his 90 years of life Fred Diamond was known for his compassion and caring nature, generosity, good humor and knack for telling a great story. He gave so much of himself to so many people.
Born in Miami Beach in 1930, Fred was the grandson of a pioneer Miami Family. He graduated Miami Beach High in 1948 where he received an award as the most outstanding athlete in the history of Miami Beach High, lettering in four sports: football, basketball, baseball and track in a single year. It's an accomplishment that had never been done before. In addition, Fred was named to The Miami Herald All City Team in football and baseball.
He attended the University of Florida from 1948-1952 as a quarterback for the Florida Gators. There he proudly became known as the only left-handed Jewish quarterback in Gator history. He also lettered in track, was a proud member of ZBT, a member of the insurance society, the "F" club and Delta Sigma Pi business fraternity.
He was married to his high school sweetheart, Sue Jaffee for 67 years and the two traveled the world together.
Fred had a successful career as an entrepreneur and business owner. He was an independent insurance agent until retirement and was an owner of Trophy World. Always learning a new hobby, he obtained his private pilot's license and would fly his family to weekend getaways. He loved gardening, theater, going to the gym, and especially his hunting camp in Central Florida.
Fred was an avid sports fan, as an original Miami Dolphin season ticket holder, he never missed a game. He also attended every UM football game. His daughters fondly remember when they would host The Miami Dolphin players at their home for stone crab parties.. He served as a two-term President of the Miami Touchdown Club and Czar of the Golden Era Gators. He supported numerous charities and non-profits, including Temple Judea where he was a member for 53 years. He also served on the Board of Directors of the National Parkinson's Foundation.
Fred is survived by his wife Sue, daughters Dr. Andrea Diamond (Dr. Steven Kanter), Lisa Faris (Leon) and Karin Jawitz (Lane), and grandchildren Wesley, Haley, and Liza Kanter, Rebecca Cunningham(Drew) and Bradley Schleicher, and Eric, Gregory, and Madeline Jawitz. He also leaves behind many devoted nieces and nephews. Fred was a wonderful father, grandfather, and friend and his memory will remain in our hearts forever.
His family extends warmest thanks to his caregivers who eased the final months of his life; Carole Gibson, Evans Etienne, and Marna Jeffries.
The funeral will be held on Tuesday May 18th 2:00 at Mount Nebo Kendall 5900 SW 77th Avenue Miami, Florida
