Joel Meltzer Obituary

MELTZER, JOEL SIMON, passed away Tuesday, October 31st, 2006. Born in New York City, Joel served in Naval Intelligence in post World War II Berlin. Upon returning stateside he moved to Miami Beach and began a successful career as a Publisher's Representative. Over five decades Joel represented virtually every major newspaper and publishing group from Conde Naste to Hearst to the Washington Post. He used to say he knew when he had done a particularly good job for a magazine because they could fire him and take it "in house". He was in the relationship business and over the years he amassed a large group of people that were pleased to call him friend. Joel had his own special table at Joe's right on the central aisle where he entertained friends and colleagues for decades. He always had the latest joke that he delivered in his own unique style. He was a gentle man who savored his friends and contributed to the richness of their lives in many ways. Joel is survived by his wife Toni Hope; his nephew, Larry Meltzer; his niece, Martha Heald; sister-in-law, Sue Elkanick; grandnieces, Abby Heald, Andrea and Heather Meltzer, Jamila and Johanna Perlas; and grandnephew, Josh Heald and Kim Perlas. Services will be 12 Noon tomorrow, Friday, November 3, 2006 at Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd., (at US1), Coral Gables. Joel was a special friend...and the funniest man I knew...but above all else was his loyalty...I will miss the semi-annual phone call just to check up on me...but am grateful we had one great time at the Esquire reunion last year

I was so sorry to hear about Joel’s passing. Myself, like so many here in the local Miami advertising community have many fond memories of Joel. The many lunches at Joe’s, his jokes and stories and his kindness and caring for friends and family. He will be missed.

How do you say goodbye to a friend of 35 years. Well, you don't. You remember the times you laughed together working on Esquire, GQ and all the Conde Nast books. And we did laugh!
Joel once kept a room mates socks wet for 5 days at a sale meeting by rinsing them in the sink everyday.

I was so shocked to learn of Joel's passing. I knew him and worked with him for almost 40 years and we shared so many laughs together. He was a wonderful friend and will be sorely missed. God Bless him.

Sorry to hear of Joel's passing. He was a pleasure to work with, a real gentleman and hard to forget. We were fortunate enough to be among his many guests at Joe's where we will always remember him holding court.

He will be a tough act to follow.

Joel was, without a doubt, the nicest, most decent person I have ever known.

My condolences to Hope and Joel's family. In 1958, Joel and I shared an office on Alton Road at 17th Street. We both had fledgling businesses..he as a newspaper rep and I as a pr firm..and couldn't afford the rent on our own. There was no air conditioning and only manual typewriters in those days, but we were both young and ambitious, laughed alot and worked hard. Over the years, whenever we would run in to each other, we would reminisce about those early days.
