Kenneth Scofield Keyes III

Kenneth Keyes Obituary

KEYES, KENNETH SCOFIELD, III. Services for Kenneth Scofield Keyes III, scion of a well-known Miami family, will be held in Cleveland, TN, birthplace of his mother, the late Roberta Rymer Balfe. Kenneth died of an apparent aneurism on 30 January while visiting Las Vegas, NV. "Ken was widely read and a keen student of history and philosophy," said his sister Clara Keyes Hardin. After graduating from Coral Gables High School, Ken attended the University of Florida and Harvard Law School. He left Harvard his second year to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served in Vietnam and was awarded a combat infantryman 's medal. Ms. Hardin added that "much of his life after Vietnam was spent abroad. There were few continents he hadn 't visited." He was fluent in Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and spoke German and Russian as well. He loved the sea and sailed boats in Miami, the Bahamas, New Zealand and Hawaii. Born in Miami in 1942, Ken was the son of the late Ken Keyes Jr., author of numerous philosophical and self-help books, and the late Roberta Rymer Balfe, a founder of the Greater Miami Opera and patroness of the arts. He was the only grandson of Kenneth S. Keyes, founder of the Keyes Company of Miami, and also a grandson of Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Rymer Sr., founders of the Magic Chef Inc. of Cleveland, TN. Ms. Hardin noted that "Kenny inherited our father's intellectual curiosity and our mother 's appreciation of opera."

Kenny and I were high school buddies when he attended Southwest high. We became friends and we lost touch while at u of Florida. We went on boat trips with the family Clara Sue and shnopsy the dachshund pet. Shnopsy always had her nails done in red. Had wonderful memories with the family.I remember going on the family yacht to tavernier in the keys...I remember being with Kenny and going to the events at the Dinner key yacht club. I tried on several occasions to get back in touch with Kenny but was not able to do so . I will always remember him and the times we had together as buddies....... Vic .Anagnostis

I first met Kenny during the summer of 1957 while trying out for the Coral Gables Football. I knew him for those three years, I admired him for his effort to learn three new words each day. He was heads and shoulders above us intellectually.
