George Dickert Obituary

George Dickert

March 23, 1927 - December 1, 2025

George Harold Dickert, a cherished family man, respected veteran, and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, in Bristol, VA. Born on March 23, 1927, in Jersey City, NJ, George's life was marked by his unwavering integrity, kindness, and an enduring commitment to his loved ones and country.

George's early years were spent in Lyndhurst, NJ, where he was raised by his parents, Charles William and Cecelia (Germaine) Dickert. His formative experiences there shaped the man he would become. In August of 1944, at the tender age of 17, George answered the call of duty and entered the United States Navy. He served with honor in the Pacific during World War II and was honorably discharged in July of 1946, carrying with him the lessons of resilience and camaraderie.

Following his military service, George pursued higher education with a fervor for knowledge and self-improvement. He attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering and was inducted into the Tau Beta Pi national honor society in recognition of his academic excellence. His quest for learning continued at Rutgers University, where he achieved his MBA, setting the stage for a successful career.

Professionally, George made his mark at the GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company in Bristol, Tennessee, where he dedicated many years before retiring. His colleagues remember him as a man of great intellect and wit, always ready to lend a hand or share a word of advice. George's commitment to his community was evident through his active membership in the Knights of Columbus at St. Anne Catholic Church and his involvement with the Mount Rogers Appalachian Trail, where he helped maintain the beauty and accessibility of the trail for all to enjoy.

George's love for his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Margaret Frances (Gilliland) Dickert; and his son, Robert Bruce Dickert. His legacy lives on through his daughter, Bridget Ann Dickert; his grandchildren, George Mason Dickert and wife, Abigail Neal Dickert of Taylors, SC, Robert William Dickert and wife, Beth Powell Dickert of Candler, NC, John Warren Dickert of Bristol, TN; and his great-grandchildren, Russell Mason Dickert, William James Dickert, Merle Martin Dickert, Addison Ann Emery and Maggie Warren Dickert. Each of them carries a piece of George's spirit and teachings in their hearts.

An avid gardener, George found solace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His garden was a testament to his patience and care, flourishing under his attentive eye. Traveling was another passion, as he explored the world with a sense of wonder and adventure. George was also an enthusiast of outdoor sports, enjoying tennis, golf, and skiing, which kept him active and engaged with the world around him.

In his later years, George served as a volunteer at Bristol Regional Medical Center, where he offered comfort and companionship to those in need. His generosity of spirit made him a beloved figure within the hospital walls.

George Harold Dickert lived a life of purpose and service, touching the lives of many with his generosity and warmth. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will be cherished and kept alive through the stories shared and the lives he influenced. Rest in peace, George, your legacy endures.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 13, 2025, from 12 to 1 p.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church (316 Euclid Avenue, Bristol, Virginia 24201). A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m., with inurnment to follow.

When we moved to Bristol in 1970, George and Maris were almost the first people we met. I believe it was on the tennis court as both George and my first husband, Dave, were passionate about the game. My special relationship at the time with George was downhill skiing. We frequently went to the North Carolina mountains on weekends.
Many years later, after both Dave and Maris had died, my second husband and I spent a good deal of time with George. In fact he became an honorary member of our extended family, visiting our Vermont home for many family celebrations. He traveled with us to Africa and Morocco and then visited us several times when we started spending more time in Panama.
George was kind, caring and interested in making his time truly worthwhile. I envied his fabulous garden and all the flowers and trees he tended with such dedication. He cared deeply about our planet and worked to make his little corner as sustainable as possible. We loved to talk politics and he was a keen follower of the news. We shall dearly miss our conversations. Go well, George! How we shall miss you!
