William Ray “Papa” Dickert, who peacefully entered eternal rest on February 20, 2026, his 97th birthday. Born on February 20, 1929, Ray lived his entire life in Newberry, South Carolina — a place he loved deeply and proudly called home.

Affectionately known as “Papa” to most and “Sambo” to a special few, Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He was married to the love of his life, Nancy Shealy Dickert, for 68 wonderful years before her passing.

Ray was the son of the late Forrest Walter Dickert and Ruth Senn Dickert. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Joanne Dickert Fuller (PK) and Evelyn Dickert Davis (Heyward); his beloved wife, Nancy; and his grandson, Colt Dickert.

He proudly served in the National Guard and worked for more than 40 years as a supervisor in the cloth room at Kendall Mill, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.

An avid hunter and fisherman, Ray cherished the outdoors. Even at the age of 88, he harvested a turkey — a story that perfectly captures his determination and spirit. He loved his faithful dog, Duke, and treasured every moment spent with his family.

He is survived by his children:Dawn James (Danny), Dean Dickert (Donna) and Dale Dickert

His grandchildren:Dan James (Paula), Deena Long (Josh), Deanne Piester (Jonas), Reid Dickert (Ashley),  Cody Dickert (Sam), and Beatrice Sarinana (Luis).

His great-grandchildren:Lawson James, Lily Lewis, Cooper Lewis, Maddock James, Lena Dickert, Gunner Piester, Savannah Piester, River Dickert, Lincoln Dickert, Owen Dickert, Jackson Dickert, Alexa Sarinana, and Eva Sarinana.

Ray’s life was marked by strength, loyalty, quiet humor, and deep love for his family. His legacy will continue through the generations who proudly called him Papa.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to special friends Faye Morris, Julie Ammons and Pastor Jeff O'Dell and Kim O'Dell for their kindness and support, and to Bernardo’s Hospice for the compassionate care they provided.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Memorials may be made to Cross Point Church, PO Box 1171, Newberry, SC 29108.

Private services will be held at a later date.
