J.L. Penton Obituary
Lowell attended Ross Point School and graduated at the end of the 11th grade. He attended Cooke County Junior College for two years and taught and coached for five years at the Bulcher School in Cooke County where he also served as superintendent.
It was during this time that he also attended North Texas and earned a bachelor of science degree in education. On June 2, 1940, he married Katherine Jenkins also of Prairie Point.
He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942 and graduated from the USCG Academy as a commissioned ensign. At the end of WWII, he was serving in New Orleans attached to shore duty and ships. When the war ended, he received his discharge as a full lieutenant.
He returned to private life and located in Denton where he worked on and earned a masters degree in education.
He opened the Army Store in 1947 and then opened Penton Boats in 1952 which he and son, Jim, owned and operated for 48 years. He retired at 85 at which time he devoted his time to hunting and grand and great-grandchildren.
Lowell is survived by Katherine, his wife of 68 years; son, Jim and his wife, Cynthia Penton; daughter, Dianna and husband, Richard Alagood both of Denton; grandchildren, Lisa and husband, David Hineman of Denton, Scott and wife, Dawn Alagood, of Pilot Point and Brad and wife, Tracy Penton of McKinney. He also had five great-granddaughters and three great-grandsons, all of which filled him with great joy.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Denton and was in good health for 92 1/2 of his 93 years. His mind and his sense of humor were sharp until the end. He always had a story to tell. He will be missed by his family and friends. He blessed us all!
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Christian Church of Denton with burial noon at the Rosston Cemetery in Rosston.
