POTTSBORO - Martin Shelby Rogers, 86, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 at his home in Pottsboro. Shelby was born April 20, 1922 in Roff Okla. to Wm. Orval and Lucy E. Rogers. He married Marjorie J. Crump on July 16, 1950.
Shelby attended grade school in Hart, Okla., graduated from high school in Vanose, Okla., and attended Oklahoma A&M at Stillwater. He worked on the family farm until 1942 and joined the Army Air Corps. He went into air traffic control training in Fort Worth and then was stationed at Tyndal Field, Fla. He was shipped overseas to Trucial, Omen and Istanbull, Turkey. He received Middle East Service Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged in March, 1946. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps Reserve for three years. In 1947 he went to work for the Civil Aeronautical Administration (now called the Federal Aviation Administration) at Love Field, Dallas. He was assistant chief. This is where he met his future wife, Marjorie, who was a meteorologist with the U. S. Weather Bureau.
Shelby retired in 1974 from the new DFW International Airport FAA Tracon. At this time Shelby and Marjorie moved from Dallas to the farm they bought in 1972 near Lake Texoma (the Mill Creek Area) Pottsboro. They soon became members of the Pottsboro ISD Athletic Booster Club in which they remained active members several years after their son and daughter graduated from High School. They also became involved with the Locust Volunteer Fire Department. They served not only as "firemen" but officers, board members and in charge of many of the bi-annual garage and bake sales. They retired from the Fire Department in May, 1977. In 1981. Shelby and Marjorie joined the Lakeside Dudes and Dolls Square Dance Club. They held several offices and were chairmen of numerous committees. They were selected as the Clubis "Couple of the Year" in 1983 and 1992. They were members of the Pottsboro Area Chamber of Commerce for a few years. They were chairmen of the "Name the Roads" in the Pottsboro ISD area. They also installed the new road signs.
Shelby's family is very grateful to First Texas Home Health Care (thank you Starla, Shannon and Regina) and Home Hospice of Grayson (thank you Susan and Crystal) for the excellent care they gave to Shelby. Because of them Shelby was able to stay in his own home his final days.
Shelby is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie of the home; son, Paul D. Rogers and wife Jenifer of New Braunfels; son, Carl A. Rogers of Pottsboro; daughter, Pamela Sue Forman and husband Jeff of Pottsboro; grandchildren, Marcie Lynn Rogers of Dallas; Paul D. Rogers, Jr., Justin Rogers and Harley Rogers all of New Braunfels; Michael Alan Spencer and wife April of Manvel, Shelby Jean Forman of Pottsboro; two great-grandchildren, Tyler Rogers and Khila Spencer. He is also survived by "extended families" J.D. and Barbara Thomas, Bessie Lou and Edward Bingham and our "nosy neighbors" that look out for us, Bob and Sandy Dorth, and the many wonderful friends, all of the Pottsboro, Lake Texoma area. Last but not least, the many, many friends (aka "The Idiot Bunch") of the Dallas Metro Area.
Shelby was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wm. David Rogers and Richard C. Rogers; sisters, Lois (Polly) Rogers Wright and Brownie Louise Rogers Huff and great-grandchild, Malachi Spencer.
There will be no services. Shelby and Marjorie decided that upon their deaths they would be cremated and their ashes would be put together and scattered where their great grandson Malachi's ashes were scattered on their farm after his death on Jan. 19, 2007.
In lieu of flowers, Shelby requested that you show your love and kindness to children, family and friends.
