Daniel B. Bates, 82, of Montesano, passed away on February 28, 2022. He was born in Darrington, Washington to John and Marguerite Bates. Dan graduated from Darrington High School and Western Washington College of Education now known as Western Washington University. While in college, he joined the Marine Corp Reserves and was recognized for skilled marksmanship.
Dan married his high school sweetheart Carol Lein in Darrington on September 16, 1961. They were married for 60 years.
Dan's first teaching job was with the Edmonds School District. He then returned to the Darrington School District to teach and coach. His first principal job was in Almira, WA. He also held administrative positions with the Onalaska School District and the Hoquiam School District. He retired after working for the Bremerton School District as a middle school principal and then as the athletic director/assistant principal.
He had served as an elder with the Montesano Presbyterian Church.
As a high school senior, he was a member of the Darrington basketball team which won the state championship in 1957. He later coached the team, with his brother John as a starter, to a third-place finish at the state tournament.
Several of Dan's interests revolved around football. He was the "commissioner" of a fantasy football league with family and friends for many years. He held season tickets for the Seahawks during their early years, and he was also a big fan of Montesano Bulldogs football.
Dan is survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, April (Brad) Pocklington; a son, Tim (Allison) Bates; a brother, John (Karolyn) Bates; grandchildren, Sam (Katie) Pocklington, Aubree (Ben) Fudge, Kami Bates and Evan Bates; and great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ellie Mae Pocklington.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Bates.
Dan grew up next to the Sauk River and fished it often with William, John, and his cousin Jack Bates. His family plans to gather along the Sauk River later this year to celebrate his life.

You were a great coach when you started a Babe Ruth team in Hoquiam and took a chance on me as a 15 yo, thank you.

Yup. Still miss him. My memory of him comes to life whenever we have a nice, sunny, warm-ish, afternoon..... I can still see him sitting out there on their deck sitting in the warm sun. Many times I would break up his peaceful sun-time and invite myself over and we'd just sit and talk for a little bit about whatever unimportant stuff we could come up with- (he had the best laugh!). Wise beyond his years, his facial expressions told the story as much as any words ever could. He was always a big lift to my day(s). Yup. Still miss him.

We moved in across the way from Dan & Carol in 1997, and always considered him my friend. He loved to sit out on his back porch on many a sunshine-y afternoon, just enjoying the day. When we'd see him out, many times I'd walk over, sit down in the chair next to him, and we'd visit for a bit. It was always fun.
Dan was a great guy, had a great sense of humor, a great laugh, and always an easy smile. It was just somehow relaxing just sittin' there "solving all the World's problems". I will never forget those moments.
Rest in Peace, my friend.

Dan Bates was my favorite principal in my 33 years of teaching. He was kind and caring. He loved his staff and our students. He treated everyone with respect. Rest in peace Mr. Bates.
