Nancy DeVoe Obituary

Nancy C. DeVoe, 76, of Marysville, Washington, went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 25, 2024. She was born on December 2, 1947, in Reidsville, North Carolina to parents Grady & Mary Barker, who were long time residents of Darrington and part of the Tarheel migration from North Carolina, moving the entire family to Darrington. Nancy was an avid softball player and played on the Reece Brothers Softball Team. She played in a league alongside her sisters and was an all-star hitter. It was well known that when Nancy was up to bat that she would clear the bases bringing her teammates home. The games were fun and exciting. Many wonderful memories were made out on the softball field. Nancy loved the sport, and her softball uniform was a prized possession. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially when everyone got together for a barbeque or a holiday dinner. On occasion a competitive family game of softball would follow. It was a fun filled time with plenty of banter and laughter and was a thrill to be on the winning team and have bragging rights. Nancy worked as a packer at the Shingle Mill. She also drove the school bus for the Darrington School District. Her niece and nephews have fond memories of her picking them up for school. Especially, the time when the school bus got stuck in the snow. It was a very exciting day. Nancy is deeply loved by all that know her. Her kind spirit and beautiful smile will be missed.

Surviving Nancy is her Son; David (Melissa) DeVoe of Billings, MT. Siblings; Fred (Loni) Barker, Ray (Lawnie) Barker, Wayne (Ruth) Barker, OnaMae Griffiths, Donna Bickford and her 12 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren.

Nancy was preceded in death by her Father; Grady Barker, Mother; Mary Barker, Brother; Harry Barker, Sister; Joyce Jernigan, Grandson; Mitchell DeVoe and Niece; Ashley Griffiths.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff and caretakers at the Marysville Care Center.

A private family gathering will be announced at a later date.

I sure am going to miss her too. I´m so grateful to have been able to see her a few times over the last few years at Uncle Wayne & Aunt Ruth´s
I remember the Barker family softball games in Darlington when we were little. They are some of my favorite memories. I remember we also had a few games at Garfield park in Everett. Aunt Coochie was an amazing player and always so sweet and kind to me. I remember one time in Great Grandma & Great Grandpa´s yard us kids were practicing for the softball game and I hit Christopher in the middle of the forehead with the bat. His forehead swelled into a goose egg very fast. Grandma Barker was watching from inside the kitchen and I felt so terrible that everyone was going to be mad at me. I remember I was crying and went and hid by the fire wood stack, Aunt Coochie found me and gave me a big hug and told me it was going to be okay
That small gesture of love and kindness has stuck with me my whole life. I love you Aunt Coochie, I can only imagine the softball games happening
In heaven right now... I´m sure your glove is made of gold
