Opal M. Root passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at the Warm Beach Senior Care Center.
She was born on November 24, 1905, in Napavine, Washington. Her entire life was spent in Washington State. She graduated from Seattle Pacific College and received a Masters Degree from the University of Washington. It was at Seattle Pacific College that she met her husband, Burton T. Root. After graduation Rev. Root assumed his first pastorate in Blaine, Washington with his new bride. This was to become a lifetime of service to the many Free Methodist churches they served. Opal worked along side in many capacities. She was a considerate hostess, excellent meal planner and preparer. She made each parsonage an inviting place for people to meet, and very often, stay. She was always involved in mission affairs and was often President of the Women's Missionary Society. Along with her church involvement she taught school for a few years. She was always a loving, capable and supportive mother who set a high standard for her children.
Opal is survived by three children, Ruth Thompson (Wes), of Bellevue, Washington, Ralph (Beth), of Spring City, Tennessee, and Burton L (Lisa), of Whidbey Island, Washington. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Ashton, of Bellevue, Washington; and many grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 79 years; her two sisters; as well as four brothers.
Opal will be sorely missed by all of those who were influenced by her Christian testimony and loving concern.
A time of viewing will be held from 9:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 24, 2008, at Gilbertson Funeral Home, 27001 88th Ave. NW, Stanwood, Washington.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3:00 p.m., on September 25, 2008, in the Beachwood Chapel, at the Warm Beach Senior Center, in Stanwood, Washington.
