Richard Schmidt Obituary

July 11, 1952 - Nov. 29, 2013 The son of Henry and Margaret Schmidt and the brother of Tom, Harry, Lucy, Georgia and Steve passed away peacefully in his sleep. He had many artistic ventures in Richland, WA before he met the love of his life, Sandra K. Schmidt and settled in Mukilteo, WA with their four children, Amie, Tyson, Daniel and Sarah. He was the proud grandfather to Justin, Kendra, Ethan, T.J., Kyla and Beau. Together they raised their children, pets, gardens, and spent their days creating flutes and ocarinas, turning the hours to music. He and Sandi created Clayzeness Whistleworks and positively affected the entire Pike Place Market community for thirty years as they sold their musical treasures that now travel the globe. He touched the hearts and minds of so many people, we are overcome just trying to comprehend.

I still don't know what to say. I keep wanting to call you to tell you something or ask you something but I think of anything right now. I miss you dad.

Dear Peace Tree Family,

Just to let all of you know that I have two great big Scandinavian shoulders should any of you need one or both of them, now, or ever. What comforts me is the knowledge that all of you have each other, and then there is the music, tinged with longing, deep colors and love, which is constant, sustaining, and capable of lifting the deepest melancholy, skyward. Tonight, the candles are lit for Richard, and for all of you. Love, Cali

I will never forget you dear cousin. I am still having a hard time believing you are gone...you were just a year older than me. Oh the memories I have. Really makes me realize how precious life is and makes me want to appreciate each day God gives us. Rest in peace...see you when God calls me home. Love you

My condolences to the family....from the Olson side back here in Iowa / Nebraska. I had planned next summer to go to Pike Street and look him up and visit the shop. I have one of his whistles sitting right on my desk, along with the music book. Prayers to all. Richards dad was my grandmother (Ruth Olson) half brother.

This is so hard to see and to write. I can't count the many ways Richard shaped my spirit, but I can say with certainty that he was proud of me, and always let me know it. I am so thankful my children got 20+ years of Papa Richard, and we will miss him dearly...

Dear Sandi, Amie, Sarah, Daniel, Tyson and Grands, I am heartbroken for your sudden loss, especially the grandkids. Richard was such a great grandfather! I will miss him terribly. He was a mentor to me in the art of generosity and equality. Sending love and heartfelt sympathy to all who knew and loved him.

My daughter Ani still has her instrument she got the year you all had a class at Meltdown. So sorry to hear of his passing. I didn't know him personally but was so priviledged to see how he interacted with the kids. He seemed to glow from the inside and a good person. I also think he must have been doing something right to get a daughter like Sarah (who I have learned to know over the years with our volunteering at the kids area) who is another very good person too.

Everlasting Love. Miss you dad, but I know you'll be all around us.
