Ruth Scougale Obituary

In her own words: Ruth May was born on St. Patrick's Day in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia,to be the only child of Ada and Arthur Evans. After happy years at a 2-room elementary school, she entered Somerville House, Brisbane Girls' High School from which she would be graduated in 1935 as Valedictorian. In 1938 she graduated from the University of Queensland, the only university in the state. A year at the State Teachers' Training College followed which led to her teaching at two country high schools before a return to teach at Somerville House during World War II. In the meantime, she also acquired over two years' time, the Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. In 1943, Ruth May met and married Sgt. Myron Scougale of the U.S. Army, Signal Intelligence Service, thereby becoming a war bride in May of 1944. Daughter Helen was born in Brisbane in 1945. Six weeks later, U.S. service people were sent home. Finally in April of 1946, Ruth May and Helen joined Myron in Everett after being transported by the USS Mariposa along with other war brides. After the birth of son Gordon in 1948 and a summer at the University of Washington in 1951, Ruth May was offered a position at Everett High School where she taught for nine years, followed by sixteen at Cascade High where she was a member of the original faculty in 1960. She retired in 1977 after busy and rewarding years of service with the Everett School District. In 2008 she regained her Australian citizenship, becoming a dual citizen, that was, according to laws at the time, denied in 1951 when she became a U.S. citizen. Ruth May was a member last at Spirit of Grace United Methodist Church before a move to Stanwood where the Our Savior's Lutheran congregation blessed her as well. She was affiliated with and enriched by the International Wives organization (war brides from all over the world, Everett Branch), Washington State Retired Teachers' Association, Church Women United, United Methodist Women and the American Association of University Women. Love encompassed Ruth May all the days of her life, in 58 years of marriage and the company of daughter Helen (Jerry, deceased) and son Gordon (Lynn), grandchildren Heather Teegarden, Robin Garrison, Peter Scougale, and Philip Scougale; great grandchildren: Grant, Brock, Jack and Henry; Sean, Levi, Silas, Caleb, Hannah; Andrew, Colton and Kyla. Services for Ruth May will be at Stanwood United Methodist Church, 27128 102nd Drive NW, Stanwood, WA 98292 at 2 p.m_ on May 9, 2022.

Helen, I hope you are enjoying the beautiful Spring in Washington and find a special way to remember your Mom today. Thinking of her will inspire me to sharpen my wit a bit as I try to analyze the day's news. God Bless.

May has always had a special place for me since meeting Her when my family moved to Everett in 1956.
She always welcomed myself, and our West Ridge kids to her Home almost everyday for our Kids shows at 4pm on TV.
Every once in awhile she would have us stay for a slide show when May & Myron had been on a Trip somewhere.
Our West Ridge gang usually consisted of myself, Gordon- of coarse- Brothers - Steve & Mark Albright , Chris Cramer, Eldon Wexler, and our youngest member, Kenny Grossman, who lived next door to Gordon.
May enjoyed coming out to inspect some of our experiments we conducted out in the woods behind their Home. This included our two cans with a string- rope- between then to talk to each other. She seemed really interested in our experiment showing how we could get water to go up hill in a long small trench out in the woods.. She always said " Keep up the good work Boys".
OK, there was one of our little experiments regarding our Electrical one that did not go according to plan.
I believe Myron had a lot to say about this particular experiment that night.
May also checked on us when our gang camped out in their back yard. We also had several outings up to their Summer Home on Camano Island.
All of our playgrounds in the woods are gone now, but great memories we kids back then are all we have to remember about May & Myron. Mays Australian voice was always something I will always remember, that and a large sign above their TV in their Rec room.
" The Transylvania Trots"
It doesn't get any better then that. I hope Heaven can adjust with both her, and Myron, together again.
Respectfully submitted by: Ron Osborn

Helen,
I wish I could be there to celebrate your Mom's incredible life. I will always be amazed at her memory. At 100 years young, she remembered lots of individual stories of our 1963 class. Thank you for letting a few of us crash her birthday party! It was especially nice for those of us who didn't have a chance to visit with her at our 50th reunion. She was a tough but great Latin teacher, and a very engaged advisor. We also admired her surprising wit when she let us see it! God bless you all.

Helen, Gordon and family, I am so sorry to read on FB, about the recent passing of your Mom. I enjoyed the writeup about her very wonderful and long life! You were blessed to have her for so long, tho I know it is never long enough. My sympathies to all of you! I am not sure if I ever met your Mom. I know I met your Dad when my Dad worked with him! I appreciated your kind words about my sister, Gordon, at our last EHS reunion which occurred shortly after her death! She had encouraged me to go to that reunion, since she was always much better than I was keeping up with long time friends. I enjoyed my chat with you, Helen, at her funeral reception. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time. Sincerely, Marita Dombek Niemann

I learned to know May as a fellow attender at St. Paul Methodist some years ago. She was a very nice person and I enjoyed having a chance to chat with her each week.
