Sieg Kiemle, 82, of Seattle, WA, passed away peacefully March 1, 2013. He was born July 28, 1930 in Cincinnati, OH, graduated Proviso E. HS in Chicago, Ill in 1948 and attended Iowa State College (Forestry). He transferred to the University of Washington, graduated from the School of Fisheries in 1953 then worked as a marine biologist for the State Fisheries Department through 1959. In 1959 he completed requirements to become a high school science teacher, and was assigned his first position at Garfield High School. He received the biology teacher of the year award for the state of Washington in 1966. In 1967 he attended OSU in Corvallis, OR and received his MS in Science Education. In 1971 he was asked to teach at Ingraham High School, where he taught until his retirement in 1989. He was a distance coach for track and cross country at both schools. In 1980 he started working on his AA degree from Edmonds CC, in ornamental horticulture, which led to interning at Molbak's, and later starting his own business, SK Nursery, on Whidbey Island. In his retirement he also became active as an educational cruise ship biologist, Seattle Tree and Fruit Society, the Poggie Club (small salt water fish); lobbying for fish in Olympia, enjoying his large garden at home, and writing and publishing his memoirs. He was an active member of Plymouth UCC Church for 57 years.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Fritz (Heidi); twin daughters, Elizabeth (Jeff) Thoreson and Anne Kiemle (Kael Sherrard); and eight grandchildren. He leaves a sister, Janet Martin (Jim); and sister-in-law, Isabelle French.

I was in Mr. Kiemle's home room class at Garfield. I also took Biology from him. He was a nice man and a great teacher. He really made the world a better place.

I attended Garfield and took Biology from Mr. Kiemle in the '60's. I never knew anything else about his life until reading his obituary but always admired him in high school. He had this odd semi-smirk that made me think that nothing was getting past him. No matter how smart I thought I was he was on to me.....and I admired him for that.

I wasn't a model student and I didn't make it easy for teachers to like me. I doubt that Mr. Kiemle thought much of me as a student but he never projected that. Very professional guy.

I remember seeing him in the Arboretum after a GHS cross-country team training run surrounded by his young charges who were red faced and bent over retching from exertion. He was standing relaxed, hair tousled, smiling serenely, breathing easily and covered with mud. The only teacher I ever saw covered with mud....and he was happy about it.

Not a normal teacher. Not a run-of-the-mill human being. He was a definite influence on my life.
