Thomas Cornish Obituary

Thomas Austin Cornish was born on October 9, 1935, to Sam Austin Cornish and Marguerite Beatrice Tesmer in Madison Wisconsin. Tom grew up on the family farm in Spencer, Wisconsin, with his grandparents, aunt and uncle, and cousins. It is there that Tom's ever-present values were established and nurtured; loyalty, humility, kindness, love of family and appreciation for animals and nature. He loved football and was a Green Bay Packers fan.

Tom moved to California when he was 16 years old to join his mom and step-dad (Lawrence Priddy Jr.) and graduated from San Mateo High School in 1953. He received his AA from Menlo College where he enjoyed Glee Club and lettered in Football. He continued his education attending Stanford University, San Francisco State (BA), Western Washington State in Bellingham, Washington, and Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington, where he received his Masters.

He was called to active duty on November 7, 1955 and served in the US Navy. He served as a Personnel Man Third Class asssigned to the Airbarsron Two, Navy #14. He was honorably discharged on November 11, 1961.

Tom worked for the Washington State Department of Corrections for 25 years as an Adult Probation and Parole Supervisor, and Community Services Manager, retiring in October of 1993. In his field of work Tom was known as an innovator and caring team builder. He was also known as one who would ask tough questions and when asked, have thoughtful answers. As a leader he was recognized as a positive encourager, "Grow instead of complain," was one of his mottos. In 1989 Tom was recognized as the Supervisor of the Year. Not to be left unnoticed was his wry smile and big grin that accompanied many a meeting. Prior to working for Washington State Corrections he worked for Safeco Insurance as a Claims Adjustor for four years.

What truly motivated Tom was his love for his wife, Linda and their children. Linda was the number one light of his life and not a day would go by that he didn't show his appreciation of her. Throughout their 60 years of marriage they raised two children, Jeffery and Jeannie, and many, many dogs, cats, chickens, and horses. Untold adventures were had living in Arlington and after retirement, Winthrop - sailing, hiking, camping, driving across country for family reunions, just to mention a few. All were alway welcome to their door for food, drink, friendship and a warm hello.

Tom is survived by his wife, Linda Cornish; son, Jeffrey Cornish and daughter-in-law, Jeri Lynn Cornish; daughter, Jeannie Sears; grandchildren Justin Heckenkamp, Tyler Dillard, Willie Sears, Kylie Jo Sears, great grandson Anthony Heckenkamp, and many nieces, and nephews.

Tom died of cancer on Saturday, May 14, in the afternoon surrounded by his loving family. A Memorial to celebrate Tom's life will be held on Sunday, June 5, from 1:00-3:00 pm, at Everett Legion Hall, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, WA 98201.
