ROCK HILL - Freida Allen Short, 57, of 304 Marion Street, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at her home.
Everyone who knew and loved Freida are invited to a Celebration of her Life from 3 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at the home, 304 Marion Street.
Friends of the family are welcome to drop by the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Baxter Simpson, at 489 Meadowbrook Lane, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22.
Freida was a force of nature. She was truly one-of-a-kind. Those of us who knew and loved her know that her love and her friendship were very special.
She received a kidney/pancreas transplant at Duke University nearly 18 years ago which saved her life. She was eternally grateful and appreciative of this second chance and she lived life each day as a blessing.
She was also a blessing to everyone who knew her. She was wise beyond her years and compassionate to a fault. Her drive to live, and to live fully, was an inspiration to her family and friends. She never met a stranger and she loved almost everyone she knew with all her heart.
Freida knew the meaning of life and she shared it with everyone. She was an eternal optimist with a joyful spirit and her life was a gift to her loved ones. If love could have saved her, she would have lived forever.
Freida graduated Rock Hill High School in 1974, and earned an Associate’s Degree from Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Leo Short. She is survived by her mother, Frances Everts and stepfather, Vern Allen, of Rock Hill; stepmother, Jeanette Whaley Short of Charlotte; partner, Martha “Cookie” Hinson of the home; uncle, Charles Short of Fort Mill; sisters, Joyce Short Simpson of Rock Hill, Peggy Short Buss of Largo, Fla., and Bobbie Sue Short Chewning of Charlotte; stepsister, Linda Carter of Rock Hill; stepbrother, Edward Manley of Rock Hill; nephews, Carter Langston of McLean, Va., and Chad Simpson of Rock Hill; nieces, Sloane Simpson of Rock Hill and Elizabeth Williams of Greensboro; great-nephews, Forest, Rob, Cody, Mars and Jake; great-nieces, Chloe, Lily and Sydney; close friends, Lillian Waisman of Charlotte and Tamara Sandiford of Charlotte; and numerous cousins, cherished family members and countless friends.
Memorials may be made in Freida’s memory to Duke Medicine Development Office, Transplant Services, 512 S. Magnum St., Suite 400, Durham, NC 27701 or to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, Va. 22312.

To Cookie and Frieda'a Mama and Family, I have known and loved freida for 41 years. I remember the times we spent together at the house in Detroit, Freida's room upstairs, and the purple claw foot bathtub. The cruises in her green mustang, and the red VW beetle. Smoking blueberry cigars, drinking beer, and listening to American Pie on every radio station. Playing our kazoo's, and talking about life. The times of our lives. I just chatted with her about 10 days ago. She asked about Christmas, my sons and Tim. She told me how happy she was that I finally found Love. I will miss her always and forever. My heart is breaking for all of you. My love is coming your way.

Freida knew me well. The good, the bad and the ugly. She cared enough to call me on stupid moves and was compassionate enough to supporting me when I decided to grow up. Her insights had more depth, truth and common sense than any philosophy I've ever studied. The loving example she set for her nephew (and my son) Mars will continue to be alive in this world. I'll never forget the night we sang Elton John songs together until Sloane called me home. R.I.P.

Of the numerous post cards, quotes and pictures Freida has posted around her home, I found this one to be my favorite: *** "Take a deep breath, you're HOME now." *** To Cookie, family and friends - As the days and weeks pass and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. We miss you Freida, you have left a lasting imprint in our hearts.
