Sara Ferguson Obituary

Sara Jefferies Fort Ferguson was a lifelong South Carolinian, a lovely lady of grace, warmth, generosity and endless welcoming, and provided her family with a strong ethic and foundation for life. She was called home on July 16, 2018 after suffering injuries in a tragic car accident on July 8, 2018.

Mrs. Ferguson of Great Falls, was the widow of Colonel Charles Ferguson who died in August of 2017. She would have been 82 on Saturday, July 21st. Over the years, her family often gathered together to celebrate her birthday. Her family will once again gather on Saturday, July 21st to celebrate her beautiful life. Her service will be held at Mt. Dearborn United Methodist Church at 2:00 on Saturday, July 21st with Rev. David Ussery officiating. The family will receive friends 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, July 20, 2018 at Dantzler Baker Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery. The picture above shows newly married Sara and Charlie Ferguson leaving for their honeymoon. He is and she will be buried in these special honeymoon clothes.

Mrs. Ferguson was a graduate of Ashley Hall in Charleston, attended Converse College and was a graduate of Clemson University. She is the direct descendent of Captain Nathaniel Jefferies, Colonial Virginia and South Carolina Pioneer, and a Veteran of the Colonial Indian Wars and a Veteran of the War of the Revolution.

She loved the military life with her husband and their five children and was immensely proud of Colonel Ferguson's dedication and long service to our country. She was thankful for the freedoms in our Country and proud to be an American. Recently she was honored to learn that a plaque and an oak tree will be dedicated at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans in recognition of the military service of members of the Ferguson and Fort families of Great Falls, South Carolina.

Her family home situated on a beautiful lawn that adjoins a hardwood forest allowed her to enjoy nature every day. She enjoyed starting the day watching the hummingbirds and the grazing deer. Throughout the day, she sat by her lily pond and appreciated the colorful lilies, the goldfish, and even the frogs and turtles. Each evening provided opportunities for a beautiful sunset, more deer watching and observing the many lightning bugs during warm summer evenings.

After Colonel Ferguson's retirement from military life, Mrs. Ferguson decided to learn income tax preparation. With a penchant for numbers, she studied and taught income tax courses and became a Certified Tax Preparer for H&R Block. As was her lifelong custom, Mrs. Ferguson loved her fellow tax friends and the help that she provided to her clients.

Mrs. Ferguson was a woman of faith, a disciple of Jesus Christ and the Lord. For years, a portion of her devotion was given in providing church music by playing the piano and organ at Mt. Dearborn Methodist Church. Mrs. Ferguson was loved and beloved by all whose path she crossed, she contributed and gave of herself willingly, but silently, seeking neither praise nor thanks.

Most importantly, Mrs. Ferguson was a beloved, cherished and precious wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and provided so much goodness throughout her life. She has left a lifelong legacy to her loved ones.

Mrs. Ferguson was the daughter of the late Laurens Warren Fort and Grace Hunt Fort. She is survived by two sons, Charles Ferguson (Loreta) Chesapeake, VA, Sam Ferguson, San Francisco, CA; two daughters, Lynn Fowler (Bill) Austin, TX, Laura Jolley (Ed) Signal Mountain, TN, eight grandchildren, Will Fowler, Laura Fowler McKnight, Amy Ferguson Bernardo, Jack Ferguson, Patrick Ferguson, Carolyn Jolley Stevens, Ed Jolley, Zach Jolley, nine great grand-children, her cousins, nieces, and nephews. Mrs. Ferguson was preceded in death by her husband Charles Ferguson, son Jack Ferguson, a granddaughter, Sara Catherine Jolley and her brother, Laurens Warren Fort, Jr.

Memorials may be made to Mt. Dearborn Methodist Church, P.O. Box 246, Great Falls, SC, 29055 or to Ebenezer Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 193, Great Falls, SC, 29055

"Then you will experience God's peace which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:7

"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit." Jeremiah 17:7-8

Memories and Condolences
for Sara Ferguson

Not sure what to say?

July 21, 2018

Dear Family,

Wyc and I send our condolences to each one of you. Sara and Charlie invited us as newly weds into their home for dinner, so kindly, when we were stationed at Ft. Myers(1968) We had just learned that Wyc would be deployed to Viet Nam. Sara brightened my gloom by telling me we would be seeing one another in 6 mos. on "R&R" in Hawaii. Indeed, we were there and saw Armstrong walk on the moon from our Iliki hotel! What a capable woman in any circumstance, she was. Marie and Wycliffe Haynes, first cousin to Sara.

Worked with Sara for over 26 years. She was always happy, I don't ever remember her being negative even when things did not look so bright. She always asked about family and made herself available to her clients. A beautiful Lady who will be solely missed.

Sara was so caring and helpful. My parents and then my husband and I came to her for tax preparation for years. We were also friends of Cara Brown Ferguson. We will miss her smile and conversations with her.
