Phil Bisesi, MEM Duke, 1980

I fondly remember Dr. Dutrow, or Dr. D, as his students called him. I was a graduate student at Duke from 1978-80, and I recall his warmth and kindness. He was also competitive on the tennis courts. He helped both me and my room mate get summer jobs working for the Forest Service in Alaska and Montana respectively. A prince of a fellow.

Many memories of George on the football fields and the Sigma Chi section at Duke. Like most of us, we went separate ways after finishing at Duke, and I only saw him once over the next 50 years when his daughter convinced him to attend one our former players reunions. He was tough as nails when playing, and no doubt his passion on the gridiron cost him from enjoying fully his wonderful family in his last years. Thank God I had the chance to know him. In Hoc!

George was a truly decent person. He cared a great deal about the students and faculty of what was then the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and kept its forestry roots intact while leading it to much broader environmental concerns. In his work both at Duke and with The Forestland Group, George navigated an amazing sea change in how we look at forests, their ownership and their management. I had enormous respect for him as a leader and as a person.

Excellent chronology. He actually worked for the Forest Service Economics Research Work unit in New Orleans, and was one of a series of famous economists / persons to spend early career there, and was infamous for getting caught in Hurricanes with Didi. Great guy, with friends and colleagues throughout forestry.
