James Gibbs Obituary
May 5, 1934 - October 2, 2022
Durham, North Carolina - The family of Mr. James Otis Gibbs, Jr. wishes to announce his passing which occurred on Sunday, October 2, 2022, at his home.
James was born May 5, 1934, in Flat Rock, North Carolina. His loving parents were James Otis Gibbs, Sr. and Minnie Darity Gibbs. A graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta and a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, James served in the United States Army in the late 1950s. He then returned to North Carolina to be closer to his family and worked as a science teacher in Spindale, North Carolina for close to a decade.
James is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; son, James Otis Gibbs, III (Pamela Gibbs) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; twin daughters, Cindi Gibbs-Wilborn (Larry Wilborn) of Washington, D.C., and Carol Gibbs (Terrence Laster) of Cary, NC; and grandchildren, Edward James Gibbs, Terrence Laster, Jr., Isaiah Laster, Tyler Wilborn and Evienne Wilborn.
Services to celebrate the life of Mr. James Otis Gibbs, Jr. will take place on Friday, October 7, 2022, at New Creation United Methodist Church, 4705 Old Chapel Hill Road, Durham, North Carolina 27707; Family Visitation 12:00 p.m., Celebration of Life Service 1:00 p.m.
Interment will take place in Markham Memorial Gardens.
Service arrangements have been entrusted to Scarborough & Hargett Celebration of Life Center, Inc., 309 N Queen St., Durham, N.C. 27701. Online condolences may be expressed at www.scarboroughhargettcelebration.com.
