Durham, North Carolina - Marie Cates Gooch, 88, passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at her home in Durham. Born in Oxford on October 7, 1934, she was preceded in death by her parents, Roy A. Cates and Alice Wilson Cates; and her son, Edwin J. Gooch, III. Marie is survived by her loving husband, Edwin J. Gooch, Jr; daughter, Debra Gooch Barnes; son, David R. Gooch (Juanita Gooch); daughter-in-law, Estelle Lorbacher Gooch; granddaughter, Katey (Levi Stecker) Barnes; grandson, David E. Barnes; and great-grandchildren, Lucy Stecker and Brady Stecker.
Marie's children treasure their memories of her strength and constant devotion over many wonderful years, including those spent traveling the world as an Air Force family. Her grandchildren remember her endearing smile and loving hugs. All are glad that she got to spend time with her young great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Gorman Baptist Church in Durham on Saturday, June 10th, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service and burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
