Wayne Ernst, 83, Sarasota, formerly of Penfield, N.Y., died Aug. 20, 2008.
Toale Brothers Funeral Home, Gulf Gate Chapel, handled arrangements.
Mr. Ernst lived in Glenridge on Palmer Ranch in Sarasota. He leaves his devoted wife of 60 years, Joyce Roland Ernst; daughter Lynne (Douglas) Dale; sons Mark (Kathleen McGlone) and Peter; and grandsons Gabriel and Nathaniel.
Wayne was born in Rochester, N.Y., the son of Earl and Ruth Cole Ernst and brother of Patricia Lyon. He was a descendant of James Cole, one of the original settlers of Plymouth, Mass. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a technical sergeant, headquarters, 1st Battalion, in Germany. He received two Purple Hearts. He was captain, artillery, New York State National Guard. He graduated from Michigan State University in June 1947 with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He had worked for 36 years at Eastman Kodak, and was the superintendent of the Gelatine Division in Rochester, retiring in 1983. An avid sailor and powerboater, he was a member of the Keuka, Sodus Bay (N.Y.) and Bird Key (Fla.) yacht clubs. He enjoyed travel in the U.S., Europe and the Caribbean.

With heavy heart, I read Mr. Ernst's obituary in the paper today, and I know he is now at peace. He was a very dear man with a quick smile who always made me smile. When he decided he wanted something done, he wanted it done "yesterday." When he made an appointment to come in to the office, we could always count on him to arrive about 45 minutes early. He will be missed. I send my deepest condolences to Mrs. Ernst, their children and grandchildren.

So very sorry to read of Wayne's passing. Although we only knew him a short time in Glenridge, we respected his judgement and his leadership on the Glenridge Advisory Council. He will be remembered in our prayers.
