Lawrence William Maas

1926 - 2022

Lawrence W. Maas, 95, of Trenton, MI and Bradenton, FL passed away February 24, 2022. He was born in Detroit, MI on November 23, 1926, to William E. and Agnes (Kaier) Maas. Larry was raised on his father's farm near the Rouge River and sold vegetables and herbs at Eastern Market. He attended Cass Tech and Southwestern High School, before serving in the U.S. Army in Occupied Japan at the end of World War II. He married Joan F. Williams in 1948, with whom he celebrated their 72nd anniversary before she passed away in May. Larry graduated from the University of Detroit and Wayne State University and devoted most of his career teaching mathematics and physics at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn. He and Joan were charter members of Faith United Methodist Church in Trenton. Larry enjoyed boating in Michigan and camping with his family throughout the United States. He delighted in visiting family and friends and loved the attention that his grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave him. Larry was a loving father to William (CharylAnn) Maas, Patricia (Steven) Minnick and Marilyn (the late Arthur) Watts. Dearest grandfather to 9 grandchildren, Sarah, Elyse, Aaron, Nathaniel, Allison, Dylan, David, Daniel, and Douglas, and 14 great-grandchildren, Rachel, Blair, Adam, Steven, Andrew, Elodie, Charles, Pierce, Thomas, Mackenzie, Fritz, Blake, Fynn and Kate. He is survived by sisters, Marion Smith (the late William), Edith (Edwin) Baustert, and Lucille (Donald) Ohsowski, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews. Larry was predeceased by his wife, Joan, and son-in-law Arthur Watts. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 9 at 1 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 2530 Charlton Road.
