Carolyn Gray Obituary
September 10, 1931 - October 14, 2025
Carolyn Thomas Gray, died on October 14, 2025, with her family by her side. Carolyn was born on September 10, 1931 to the late Ola Thomas and Ed Thomas.
After graduating high school, Carolyn attended Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. After college, she was a middle school band teacher for many years until retirement. Carolyn married Deward Charles "DC" Gray on July 18, 1964, whom she was happily married to for 57 years prior to his death in 2021. DC and Carolyn moved their family from Smyrna, Ga., to Hickory, N.C., where they raised their sons. DC and Carolyn moved to Danville, Va., in 2017 to be closer to their family.
Carolyn was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a devoted homemaker, who took pride in her garden, baking, canning and quilt making. She and DC loved to spend their time camping at the Outer Banks and the mountains in Pineola, N.C. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hickory, N.C., where she served as a deacon and gospel choir director for a number of years. She was a wonderful pianist and made many attempts at teaching her sons and grandchildren to play as beautifully as she did.
Carolyn is survived by her three sons, Andy Captain (Dagmar) of Destrehan, La.; Chip Gray (Kathy) of Pelham, N.C.; and Stan Gray of Greensboro, N.C.
She is also survived by six granddaughters, Alexis, Alisha, Ariel, Bailey, Charlotte, and Beatrice; five great-grandchildren, Hendrix, Paris, Cam, Marlo and Gray; and her brother-in-law, Jack Gray (Dawn) of Blue Ridge, Ga.
A memorial service will be held on November 22, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Dan River Church, 2805 Riverside Drive, Danville, VA 24540.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church, 339 2nd Avenue NW, Hickory, NC 28601, or 1st Care at Home - Hospice, 425 Main St., South Boston, VA 24592.
The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Cardinal Senior Living and 1st Care at Home - Hospice for the support provided to Carolyn.
