Christopher Rendleman Obituary

Christopher "Henry" Rendleman

March 18, 1935 - December 15, 2024

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rev. Christopher "Henry" Rendleman, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and beloved pastor, who died peacefully on December 15, 2024, at the age of 89, after a brief illness. Born on March 18, 1935, in Fort Wayne, IN, Henry was the youngest of seven children born to David Atwell, Sr. and Grace Aaron Rendleman. He was raised in Salisbury, NC, where he developed a deep faith in God as a member of St. John's Lutheran Church that would guide his life's work.

Henry's journey of faith and service began at Davidson College and Lenoir-Rhyne College, followed by his theological education at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. He was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 1959, beginning his ministry in Norfolk, VA, and Bristol, TN. In 1967, he became the pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC, where he would serve faithfully for 30 years. Known for his steady leadership, kind heart, unwavering faith, and dry humor, Henry was a beloved presence in the lives of his congregation, offering comfort and support to generations of families.

In 1997, after retiring as senior pastor, Henry was named Pastor Emeritus of Messiah Lutheran Church, continuing to serve his community by filling pulpits as needed for the next 27 years, even preaching as recently as two months before his passing. His ministry was characterized by a deep commitment to his congregation, a passion for teaching, and a profound love for the gospel.

On August 30, 1958, Henry married Susan Joann Atherton of Spartanburg, SC. Their marriage was a partnership rooted in faith, shared ministry in the church, and devotion to each other. Henry and Susan shared many joyful years, creating a legacy of love and faith that continues to inspire their children and grandchildren.

Henry was a man of many interests and talents. He was an avid reader, a lover of golf, and cherished family reunions and beach gatherings. As a grandfather, he attended countless events to support his grandchildren. Whether it was a play, recital, or sports, his presence was always a source of encouragement. He was a man who found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, and his legacy will continue to resonate with all who knew him.

Henry is survived by his son, Christopher Martin Rendleman of Hickory; his daughter, Lynn Rendleman Faggion and husband Mark of Raleigh; his eight grandchildren, Spencer Osterhoudt, Jamie Irish, Ellie Munn, Andrew, Joseph, David, Joshua and Susanna Faggion; and two great-grandchildren, Avery and Grant Osterhoudt. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Susan, and his siblings and parents. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, parishioners, and all who were touched by his life.

A service of remembrance and thanksgiving for Henry's life will be held at St Andrew's Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC, on December 20, 2024, at 2 p.m., with family receiving in the sanctuary at 12:30 p.m., prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Andrew's Lutheran Church or Lenoir Rhyne University.

Although Henry is no longer with us, his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him. "Well done, good and faithful servant."
