Enoch Kirkland Obituary

LENOIR - Enoch Kirkland, 66, of 2495 Dimmette Road, formerly of Stanley, died Saturday, June 26, 2010. He was born in Swain County, son of Louise McClure Kirkland of Stanley and the late Fred Lloyd Kirkland Sr. He was preceded in death by one brother, Fred Lloyd Kirkland Jr. and one sister, Linda Armstrong. He was co-founder and president of Stanley Emergency Relief Fund (SERF), he was the zoning officer for the town of Stanley from 1984 to 1990. In 1986, he was a finalist for The Nine Who Care Award. He was the 1986 Gaston County Volunteer of the Year and received the Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Brooks Kirkland; children, Ricky Dale Kirkland and wife, Melissa, of Stanley, Bobby Gene Kirkland and wife, Kim, of Lincolnton, Deborah Hullender and husband, Robert, of Kings Mountain, Robin Helms Hartz and husband, Erik, of Gastonia, and Dusty Helms and wife, Tina, of Gastonia; two sisters, Nancy McCarter and husband, George, of York, S.C., and Rozelle Helton of Stanley; two brothers, Odell Kirkland and wife, Ruby, of Stanley, and Freddie Kirkland and wife, Tammy, of Stanley; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m., Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Holly. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family would like to offer special thanks to the Volunteers of SERF, Dr. Beth Tarkington of Stanley, and Dr. Richard Browne and Dr. Sanjuv Gulati both with Sanger Clinic in Charlotte. Thank you for all the support from Carolinas Medical Center and all his friends at Green Mountain RV Resort in Lenoir. Memorials may be made to SERF, 528 N.C. 27 South, Stanley, N.C. 28164. Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly is in charge of the arrangements.
