James Randy Burroughs, Sr.

October 4, 1943 - August 4, 2024

James Randy Burroughs Sr., 80, of Newton, passed away on Sunday, August 4, 2024, at his residence.

He was born October 4, 1943, in Gaston County, to the late Jack Thomas Burroughs and Mary Lucille Grigg Burroughs. Randy was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA in Newton and retired as a teacher and coach with Catawba County Schools, after serving at Catawba Middle School, Balls Creek Elementary, Bandys High School, and Tuttle Middle School. He enjoyed civil war relic hunting with his brother and metal detecting. Randy was an avid follower of NC State sports, Lenoir-Rhyne football, Dodgers baseball, and Carolina Hurricanes ice hockey. He especially loved following his grandkids various sports and supporting them.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Christine Fulbright Burroughs; and brother-in-law, Bob Barker.

Those left to cherish his memory are: son, James "JR" Randy Burroughs, Jr. of Melbourne, FL; daughters, Julie Burroughs Kisser of Claremont, Jeanna Burroughs Goodson and husband Todd of Maiden; brothers, Tommy Burroughs and wife Jo Ann of Hoschton, GA, Kim Burroughs and wife Sabrina of Greensboro; sister,: Brenda Barker of Gastonia, Diane Huffman and husband David of Newton; grandchildren, Aaron Kisser, Christa Kisser, Jarrod Kisser, Carly Kisser Yates, Nicholas Goodson, Emma Goodson, Sylvia Burroughs, and Alexandria Burroughs; great-grandchildren, Kynsley and Ava Bumgarner, and Beckham Yates; special friend, Ruth Sanders.

A memorial service to celebrate Randy's life will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, at 4 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA in Newton. Rev. Fred Thompson will officiate. A private inurnment will be held at St. Paul Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the service from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church ELCA.
