Miriam Davis Obituary
Miriam Davis
October 28, 1936 - October 8, 2024
After a life filled with love, passion and a caring heart for others, Miriam D Davis joined her Heavenly Father on October 8, 2024.
Miriam was born on October 28, 1936, in Salisbury, NC to the late Sanford Reid Davis and Rachael Turner Davis. Lifelong friends and memories began in Albemarle before she left to attend Lenoir-Rhyne College where she graduated in 1959 with a BA in Religious Studies. Miriam began her career as Director of Christian Education at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Columbia, South Carolina. She returned to Hickory to accept the Director of Christian Education position at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Life circumstances led her back to Albemarle where she served as a case worker primarily working with foster care and adoptions at Stanly County Department of Public Welfare, currently known as DSS. God's hands brought her back to Catawba County where she worked for DSS before being recruited to the North Carolina State Division of Social Services. This position led her to obtain a Master's Degree of Social Work from the School of Social Work at UNC Chapel Hill in 1969. During her 34 years in the field of social work, she served both children and adults. Miriam would grin with a twinkle in her eye when asked about her career and say, "I worked from the cradle to the grave… adoptions of newborns to elderly services." Professionally, she was a?liated with the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers.
Known as a devoted friend, church worker, Lenoir-Rhyne alumni and community volunteer, Miriam lived life fully, joyfully and generously. An active member of Concordia Lutheran Church, she served as a Stephen Minister, an elder, and a representative on the Senior Pastor Call Committee. Due to her ongoing commitment to LRU, Miriam was awarded the Opal L Moretz Alumni Service Award in 2016. In addition, she established the Miriam D Davis Scholar- ship Fund. Over the span of her employment and retirement, she gave back to her community serving on the Board of Directors for Adult Life and the Board of Directors of Lutheran Family Services, presently known as Lutheran Services of the Carolinas. Miss Davis was awarded the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to her profession and to her community in 2018.
As Miriam is remembered by many as someone who never met a stranger, a hugger, a loyal individual to her beliefs and friends, and a diplomat, we thank you Lord for this very special child of God. Thank you for creating her to impact so many lives through her warmth, pure heart, altruistic and genuine interest in others. Miriam lived life BIG and lived it her way under God's direction all the way to the end!
Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sandra Davis Plaks of Raleigh. Survivors include a niece Catherine Windsor of Raleigh, and a nephew Eric Shuping of Georgia. Having never married, Miriam "adopted" her very special friends as her family: Roy and Cindy Walker Sigmon of Conover, George and Rebekah Foust Wilkinson of Claremont, and Michael and Cornelia Winters Allman of Conover.
A service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, Conover NC, October 15 at 1 p.m., with her body lying in state previous to the service from 12 to 12:45 p.m. Internment will follow at Rose Cemetery in Mocksville, NC. Reverend Michael Geml of Concordia Lutheran Church will o?ciate. For those that cannot attend the service, it can be viewed on YouTube, Concordia Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to be made to the Miriam D Davis Scholarship Fund LRU or Carolina Caring previously known as Hospice of Catawba County, Newton NC.
