Theodore Cummings Obituary

Theodore "Ted" Franklin Cummings III

December 5, 1941 - January 12, 2023

Theodore "Ted" Franklin Cummings III died unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, at his residence. He was 81 years old.

Ted was born Dec. 5, 1941, to the late Theodore Franklin Cummings II and Louise Cloninger Cummings.

He served in the U.S. Army as a signal intercept operator in Hokkaido, Japan, from 1962 to 1964. After he was honorably discharged from the Army, he attended and graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in 1968. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Ted owned and operated the "Wheel Sport" motorcycle dealership in Hickory. It was through his motorcycle business that he developed many lifelong friends.

After almost eight years in the motorcycle industry, Ted followed in his father's footsteps to pursue a law degree from Wake Forest University. After graduation in 1978, he returned to Hickory to practice law. Ted defended those charged with criminal offenses, including defendants charged with murder. He believed that everyone, no matter their race, economic status, or criminal charges was entitled to a zealous defense of their constitutional rights. He was respected by his colleagues across the state for his dynamic courtroom presence and strategies. He never shied away from the most difficult client or case. His humor and humility brought him much recognition in his profession.

Outside of the courtroom, Ted spent time socializing with friends and pursuing his passion for motorcycles, cars, and boats. Ted was always up for an adventure, and as a result, he had an unlimited number of entertaining stories to share.

He is survived by his son, Stirling Cummings and wife, Sandra, of Chapel Hill; son, Jason Cummings and wife, Diana, of Kirkland, Wash.; daughter, Hedy Murphy and husband, John, of Denver, N.C.; and Graeme Cummings and wife, Brittany, of Hickory. He leaves behind his seven grandchildren: Aaron, Andrew, Mateo, Addie, Luisa, Ella, and Palmer. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Michael Cummings of Georgetown, S.C.; sister, Ann Connor Cummings Jones of Winston-Salem; his sweet dog, Stella, who will sadly miss him; and many other family members. The family would also like to recognize his beloved friend who loved and cared for him, Angela Debeve.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21, at First United Methodist Church of Hickory, with Pastor Dan Duke officiating.
