Donald Carlson Obituary

Donald Bud Carlson passed from this life into the next on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Richmond, Utah, to Victor August and Eva Leona Hansen Carlson.
He married Elaine Pitcher in the Logan LDS Temple on Jan. 30, 1942. Elaine passed away Feb. 24, 2007. He served in the armed forces in World War II in the famous division "Hell on Wheels." This division was key in almost every major battle, to name just a few: D-day, Taking back Paris, and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a machinist by trade. He started losing his eyesight a few years after the war. While blind he built his own home, apartments and many cabinets for family members. He loved to stay busy building things. He developed a measurement technique using two sticks and a clamp. This became a very accurate measurement that his boys still use in some cases. He would sometimes be found on hands and knees feeling for a screw or part that he had dropped while taking apart a machine and putting it back together.
Don has a strong testimony of the truthfulness of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has served faithfully in the organizations of the church. He has been a great example of one who has endured to the end serving his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and those who knew and loved him. Serving his family and others was the most important thing in his life.
He is survived by three sons and their wives, Brent (Jackie) Carlson of Smithfield (currently serving a mission in Nauvoo, Ill.), Bob (Susan) Carlson of Provo and Brad (Lana) Carlson of Phoenix, Ariz. He has 11 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Doyle (Helen) Carlson of Alaska, Carol (Boyd) Larsen of Cove, Ken Carlson of Richmond, Tess (Wade) Christensen of Richmond, Reta (Sam) Rowland of Arizona, Thad (Carol) Carlson of Logan, Carl (Rochelle) Carlson of California, Druce (Lee) Cluff of Chugiak, Alaksa, and Joe (Kaye) Carlson of Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Myrna Allen Carlson; three grandsons, Todd, Troy and Brandon Carlson; his parents; and the following brothers and sisters: Ross and Jeanne Johnson, Lamar Carlson, George and Jen Pitcher, Leo Pitcher, Sam and Ella Hammer, Frank and Mary Povey, Lowell and Helen Reese, Doris and Ted Aston.
His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in the Richmond 1st and 3rd Ward Chapel, 135 W. Main, Richmond. A viewing will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday Oct. 5, 2008, and from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Richmond Cemetery. Dear Brent & Jackie, Bob and Susan, Brad and Lana, We were sad that we were not able to attend the funural for your father but we were grateful that we got to see him while we were in Utah. Thank you, Susan for being so kind to us even though you were busy trying to care for Don. It was such an inspiration to have Don show up at LaMar's funural. That is a memory we will always treasure. Brent and Jackie, Bob Day stayed with us, (way back when...) Is he and his wife still serving in Nauoo? Please convey our greetings. Your Mom and Dad were always so good to us. We love you all. Please keep in contact. Love, Aunt Helen and Uncle Doyle

Dear Brent, Bob, Brad and family,
How I wanted to be with the family today to honoring your dear father and my valient brother. Lee and I send our deepest love to each of you and want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you all during this time of lose. We love and appreciate being in the same family and treasure the great memories of our times shared together and look forward to more times in share.
Come and see us in Alaska and get away from that hecktick life style in the busy lives of the lower 48 and make more memories together.

What a thrill it must have been for your dad as he went through the veil and had his full eye sight restored and then could see your mom and all the loved ones who waited for him and greeted him back in our Heavenly home.
We will miss him and treasure the lessons learned by his helping hands. He was always so willing to give aid to anyone who needed him.

I treasure the days he would let me use his tools and shop and how he give me the "what for" because I didn't sweep up my sawdust messes I would leave for him.

There are so many things he helped us to learn. "Patience" was one of his least great qualities in his younger years, but as he grew older he learned that great lesson of patience better than most of us and was so kind in expressing his love.

We love you all and hope you will stay in touch with us. Love Druce

I can just imagine how happy Elaine is to see Don, and how happy he is to see her. Don always made us feel special. He was fun to visit with. We still have useful gifts that he made for us. May our Heavenly Father bless you as you remember his influence in your life.
