Steven Reeder Obituary

Steven Todd Reeder
September 4, 1952 - January 28, 2016
Steven Todd Reeder, 63, a widely loved man known by many names including Coach Reeder, Mr. Reeder, Bishop Reeder, Brother Reeder, brother, husband, Dad, and (perhaps most endearingly)Papa, passed away Jan. 28, 2016, in his cabin, which is surrounded by the hiking/snowshoe trails of the nature that he loved in Star Valley Ranch, Wyoming.
Steve was born to Spencer Ross Reeder and Verna Mable Todd Reeder on Sept. 4, 1952, in Brigham City, Utah. As a boy Steve worked in his dad's cherry orchard and on his uncle's farm in Box Elder. He graduated from Box Elder High School in 1970. After spending a semester at BYU Hawaii (and gaining competitive proficiency at the Samoan Slap Dance!), Steve received a call to serve in the Oregon Mission for the LDS Church, laboring in such areas as Hood River, Portland, and La Grande. When he returned from his mission, he attended BYU Provo and courted the beautiful Dona Jean Anderson. Needless to say, they married shortly afterward Aug. 15, 1974, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
Steve received his teaching degree in physical education and English and first taught in Duchesne for one year before accepting a position at Mount Logan Middle School, where he would go on to teach for 32 years. In 1987, Steve received a master's degree from Utah State University in exercise science. During his time as a middle school teacher, Steve took a job as an assistant track coach at Utah State University, where he coached and trained the men and women's distance track team and cross country teams for the following 35 years. While coaching at Utah State, Steve was able to take three runners to Nationals, win 38 Conference Championships, besides being able to mentor some of the greatest people to come out of Utah State's athletic program.
In 2002, Steve was nominated to be an Olympic torch bearer and was honored by being assigned to carry the torch out of the Spectrum after a community ceremony celebrating the event. Steve also participated in Scouting and worked for many years at Camp Hunt, Bear Lake, as the waterfront director, program director, and then camp director.
Steve will always be remembered for his passion for physical fitness and activities, his modest and easygoing personality, his "intimidating calves," his keen mind for continued learning, his natural affinity for telling inspirational and humorous stories, and his fierce dedication to his sweetheart wife.
After retiring from teaching and coaching, Steve and Dona eagerly accepted a mission call for the LDS Church to serve as directors of a Young Women's camp in upstate New York, where they were to begin service March 2016. Instead, Steve has been called to serve a more exalted mission.
Surviving Steve is his wife and eternal partner, Dona; Emily Ann Prusso (Dustin), Livermore, CA; Daisy Sue Scott (Shayne), Parowan, UT; Joseph Martin Reeder (Bonnie), Smithfield, UT; Isaac Spencer Reeder (Elise), River Heights, UT; Sadie Leigh West (Christian), River Heights, UT; plus 23 glorious grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, in the River Heights LDS Stake Center, 800 S. 600 East, in River Heights, UT. A viewing will be held Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., in Logan, and prior to the services Friday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net.
All attendees are invited to wear running shoes in celebration of Steve's passion for running, and in lieu of flowers, new running shoes can be donated to young runners as a means of inspiring future generations of runners. Donations will be accepted in the foyer at the funeral service or sent to: Dona Reeder, 469 E. 700 S., River Heights, UT 84321.

My life has been richer having known Coach Reeder. Will never forget your chest slap dance.

I spent numerous hours each day with coach Reeder for three years when he coached wrestling and track, and taught English and PE at Logan Junior High. He was by far the teacher I remember most during that impressionable time. He was also with me when I ran my first 10 k in 1979 out of Central Park there in Logan when I was 13.
I'm 50 now and just back from Alaska, where I finished a winter trek of 1,000 miles on foot. I'm now only one in 16 people to ever have completed it in less than 30 days. But wanted to share my success with him since he was such an inspiration to me growing up, since no one accomplishes anything on their own. Instead they have wonderfully gifted people like Coach Reeder, who provide a lifetime of inspirational fuel that never seems to empty. Thanks to him, and all the countless laps he made us run on that grass circle at LJH called a track, and all the laps in the halls running in wrestling shoes!
May your gift and love of running continue.

Sincerest condolences to Dona & family.
Coach Reeder is one of the greatest mentors in my life. Back in '91, a kid who was too naïve and oblivious regarding his own lack of ability to compete at the collegiate level, asked to join the USU cross country and track teams as a walk-on freshman. Coach Reeder not only humored me, but also somehow saw potential no other coach would have cared or bothered to develop. Life lessons he taught me over the next several years are innumerable.
Thanks, coach. The countless youth and young adults you have mentored through the years will miss your smile, your caring and easygoing demeanor, and your ability to foster self-motivation. We will do our best to carry your legacy forward.

Sadie and Family,

I only met your dad once, but I'll never forget it. He came to your house in River Heights with the USU track team bus. All of the kids in the neighborhood thought his bus was awesome, which I'm sure he anticipated.

He invited me, and a crowd of kids, onboard giving us a ride while you and Jane enjoyed some talk time. I remember he was so friendly and easy to talk with. We had a great chat for about 30 minutes while he treated us to a deluxe extended tour of River Heights and the surrounding area.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dear Dona, Daisy, Emily, Marty, Isaac and Sadie - I am very blessed to have known Steve. He embodied what life is all about. He always smiled, laughed and told funny jokes. Steve was the best coach and motivator I ever had. I ran in the early 80's at USU -- amoung his first batch of runners. I joined the team as a walk-on and he always encouraged me to push myself and dig deep. His motivation led to my great enjoyment of running and all it offers. It is something I will always do - and I have Steve to thank for that. Thank you Dona and family for sharing Steve and all he did for the many Aggie runners over the years. Steve will be missed but never forgotten.

It's been hard for me to put into words how I feel about the passing of Coach Reeder. Instead I've tried to think about what made him such a great person. He pushed people to be their best not by forcing them, but by helping them dig deep and find the desire on their own. He really did believe in every one of his athletes, even when we didn't believe in ourselves. I never would have accomplished what I did if it weren't for him. And Dona. Because heaven knows I wouldn't have endured those Saturday morning torture sessions without the promise of a gourmet breakfast made by his sweet wife! I think I learned more about relationships from those two than I did about running. Thank you, Reeder family, for sharing him with all of us. May you find peace at this difficult time.

My Uncle Steve was my first boss when I worked as a lifeguard at Camp Hunt almost 30 years ago! It is one of my favorite summers and memories and I was deeply saddened by his sudden passing. I hadn't seen Steve in years but followed his path through his kids' on social media and my parents updates. He will surely be missed as he has left us to go inspire others and make them laugh in the next life.

What a fantastic experience I have had working along side Steve. Steve and his family have blessed my life more than words can express. Teaching and coaching his children and working with his wonderful wife Dona has taught me that it all starts in the home and they have done a great job of doing that. Yes, Steve will be missed, but the memories of Steve will never be erased from my mind. I do have one experience that I would like to share and that was when I was at the Junior High with Steve. We had an assembly and bless his heart, he came out without a shirt and had some spoons and played bouncy spoons off of his body. I don't even remember what it was called, but it was great. The students and faculty just loved it.
My condolences go out to Dona and the family. I love you all.

I last saw Steve at a USU Hall of Honor induction in September 2014. Never did I believe my next trip to Logan would be to "pay my respect" to him and his family at his funeral. Steve was a great colleague and friend who was so loyal to the Aggie Track and Field and Cross Country programs fo so many years! May you rest in peace Steve, and hear the words of our savior "Well done, good and faithful servant!"

I had to read my e-mail 5 or 6 times before it would sink in that one of the greatest men I have ever known was gone. Steve was not just a great coach but a compassionate friend. I will forever be in his dept for the lessons he taught me. Hardly a day goes by that I don`t think back to the times I spent with Steve. He will be missed.

Steve was an inspiration to me and will be missed. I did my student teaching under Steve in 1998 when I was in the middle of deciding whether or not I should be a teacher. After my experience working with Steve I went on to be a teacher, principal, and now teaching at USU. He was a great mentor, and role model. Thank you for teaching me how to overcome obstacles and how to be a leader.

Steve coached me in the 800 meters in '82-86. I along with others will miss his smile and ability to make you laugh and his ability to make you dig deeper to compete. Steve Reeder will be missed.

What a choice time in my life to have met Steve and become close friends. My most successful coaching occurred doing the last 10 years I have worked with and under him. I only wished for more...but grateful for all he has given me. Memories are choice and never to be forgotten.
