Nandalal Bagchi

Ridgefield, CT - 1936 - 2020

It is with deep sadness that the family of Nandalal (Nanda) Bagchi announce his passing on April 14, 2020 at the age of 83 at his home in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Dr. Bagchi was a resident of Troy, Michigan for almost 50 years.

Due to limits on public gatherings in the State of Connecticut, no public service will be held. A private service for the family was conducted by the Wilton Hindu Mandir, Wilton, Connecticut on April 16.

Dr. Bagchi was born in Kushtia, India on August 1, 1936 to Ashwini and Joyadurga Bagchi. He had 7 siblings - 4 brothers ( Ranjit, Amya, Sanat and Arabinda ) and 3 sisters (Molina, Renuka and Konika ). He spent his early years in Kushtia and moved to Kolkata during the partition. He attended St. Xavier's College and received his B.Sc Hons. in Chemistry and then went on to Calcutta Medical College to receive his MBBS. In 1963 he moved to Detroit, Michigan to do his internship, residency (Internal medicine) and fellowship (Endocrinology). He married his wife Arleta Flansburg in 1968 and they moved to Edmonton Alberta, Canada. Dr. Bagchi did his PhD. in Biochemistry at the University of Alberta. Upon completion of his PhD he and his family moved back to Detroit in 1972 so he could join Wayne State University School Of Medicine as an Instructor. In 1989 he became a Full Professor. When he retired in 2011 he became an Emeritus Professor. Nanda loved to teach medicine and won several teaching awards. He was a Fellow Of The Royal College Of Physicians (Canada), The Endocrine Society, Fellow Of The American College Of Physicians, American Thyroid Association and American Associates of Clinical Endocrinologists. He was an expert on Thyroid disease and taught, did research, had a clinical practice and wrote articles for medical journals and chapters for medical books. He also wrote a chapter in the World Book Encyclopedia.

Dr. Bagchi travelled extensively, questioned everything and was devoted to his wife of 52 years, Arleta, his children and grandchildren. He loved to fish, camp, hike and walk on the beach and spend time with his cat, Cheri. He spent many summers on Lake Huron where he and his wife had a vacation home. Recently he moved from Troy, Michigan to Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Dr. Bagchi is survived by his loving wife, Arleta; their children, Ranjan and Monika (Perry) DeFelice; and their grandchildren Tolkien Bagchi, Fonsea Bagchi, Paige DeFelice and Tripp DeFelice.

I recently retired - and was reminded of Nanda's retirement celebration.
Nanda was a cheerful gentleman, good clinician, with a good sense of humor.
He contributed to the Endocrine Division and to the School of Medicine.

I worked with Dr. Bagchi on thyroid research back in the late 1970’s at the Donald C. Beaver lab in Detroit Michigan. The Beaver lab was a three story house just kiddie corner from the main Hutzel Hospital where Dr. Bagchi held his medical practice. Besides Dr. Bagchi I worked with his laboratory manager Birdie Shivers. As a young man in my twenties I learned quite a bit from both Dr. Bagchi and Ms. Shivers on both scientific research and life in general.

I went on to obtain my own Ph.D. and a career in scientific research and I owe part of my inspiration from working with Dr. Bagchi. He had a keen mind and a knack for designing the right scientific experiments. He always had a congenial personality and never let the disappointments sometimes associated with of scientific research get him down. He always urged Ms. Shivers and me to carry, on no matter what.
Most of my association with Dr. Bagchi was in the lab, but I do remember the one night that he and I (and maybe Arleta also?) attended a Detroit Red Wings hockey game together. Dr. Bagchi also had a sparkling sense of humor. I still chuckle to myself when he related to me about the time the he and his son Ranjan attended a Cub Scout “Indian Circle” meeting together. Dr. Bagchi told me later that he realized that he and Ranjan were the only “real Indians” there. Ha!

Anyway, I was thinking of Dr. Bagchi this morning as I sometimes do from time to time and decided to Google his name only to sadly learn of his passing. However, I’m smiling right now as I look upon his photo posted here as it reminds me what a kind happy sort of man he was. Please let me extend my sympathies to Arleta, Ranjan, Monika and Dr. Bagchi’s entire extended family. Dr. Bagchi was a gentleman and a scholar and a good friend and mentor to me when I truly needed one. I will never forget him.

As a colleague in Dept of Med, I came to know Nanda several years ago. He was soft spoken, warm hearted with a charming smile, ideal qualities for a clinician. I have very pleasant memories travelling and participating in conferences in India with Nanda.
He has trained countless number of physicians at WSU/DMC. Div/Dept and WSU are fortunate to have had a teacher and clinician of his caliber.

I am so heart broken. I have known Dr. Bagchi for most of my 28 years at DMC. He was a wonderful man, dedicated physician and a truly wonderful man. My condolences to his family.
