Wing Hong Obituary

Wing Hong

Sacramento, CA - Wing Hong immigrated to Detroit, Michigan as a teenager and attended Cass Tech H.S. After graduation, he served in the US Army during the Korean War. He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Detroit Institute of Technology and held positions with General Dynamics and NASA. Ultimately, Wing's father, Yick encouraged a career change, and in 1965, he opened Wing Hong Restaurant in Southfield Michigan. He later opened four other locations including the largest Chinese restaurant in Farmington Hills featuring a Japanese fishing village and koi pond. In addition to being a successful businessman, Wing's greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Nina, and sons Kaleford, Hoyman, and Hoylond, who are physicians and graduates of Wayne State School of Medicine, and Winkle, who is an attorney and graduate of Albany Law School. He was preceded in death by his son Waveford. Visitation will be Friday 2-8 PM at McCabe Funeral Home, 31950 W. Twelve Mile Rd., Farmington Hills. Funeral service will be 11 AM Saturday from the funeral home. Interment in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Liviona.

Sad to learn of this so late. Wing and my dad were army buddies in Ft Hood TX, where I was born. Back in MI they remained in close touch, and we were always treated like royalty when we visited the restaurant. Fondest regards to all of you from the Hogan family, now in Tucson, AZ.

Sorry to hear about this! I just heard from my Mom - Sachie Yee, who worked for many many years as waitress at the steak house, and of course I and many other family members worked there in many roles as well! Condolences, love and hugs to your family - I hope all are well - and I will always remember Wing Hong's smiling face!

Our whole family was very saddened when we heard of Wing's passing. We have been patrons of all of his restaurants starting in Southfield over 50 yrs. ago and continue to enjoy the best Chinese food from the carryout restaurant in Commerce. One of our fondest memories is Wing delivering our order for our office Chrismas party back in the 70's and 80's and his wonderful smile. Wing and Nina in addition to serving the best Chinese food were the most wonderful hosts.

Again our family offers our sincere condolences to
Nina and family. Thank you for some wonderful
memories.

Our entire family was very sorry to hear of Wing's passing. We all had been patrons of all of his great restaurants over the years starting in Southfield 50 yrs. ago. Wing catered many of our office Christmas parties and we continue to enjoy the wonderful food at the Commerce carryout. Our sincere condolences to Nina and family.

We started eating there just after it opened. I remember when it was being built. We had dinner there every couple of weeks. It was always busy on the weekends. Standing room only waiting for a table. ABC and Shrimps in Lobster Sauce were my favorites. My parents had a camera shop in Farmington, so it was great when that location opened. We were able to have dinner there after work. I moved to FL in 1982, but every time I visited MI we were sure to drop by and have a meal. They just don't make the food down here like they do up there. Recently Detroit Coney Island opened a new location and they offer an ABC on Mondays. Its good, but its not the same as Wing Hong ABC. He set the 'gold standard' for Chinese food. RIP Wing.

So sorry to hear this! We were kids in the Washington Heights neighborhood, where Wing lived also in the early years of the restaurant. We would ride our bikes up to the restaurant, go inside to the round table in the back, and then go into the kitchen for our egg rolls and fried rice. He was a friend to everyone who entered; a genuine man. Riding by his house on our bicycles, he and the kids always said hi and smiled. Condolences to the family.

I went to Cass Tech the same time Wing did. When he opened the Southfield restaurant my family and I (two boys) would eat there once or twice a month. They always ordered "the usual" (shrimp & lobster sauce). When we would travel and eat Chinese food anywhere else, They would order the "usual" and inevitably they would say, "Not as good as Wing Hong." He was a sweet man and a smart and successful person. Not only in business but in life. If ever I needed a lift in spirits, I would spend a few minutes with My favorite restaurant owner. My condolences to his family I'm sure you know you've lost a fine man. There is so much more I'd like to tell you but perhaps another time.
May he rest in peace. I was proud to call him my friend.

My parents used to take us to Wing Hong's Southfield Restaurant in the late nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies. We were a relatively large Jewish family (six kids) and I remember he used to welcome us all at the door in a warm and genuine way, making each of us feel very special indeed. (I still long for the shrimp in lobster sauce. A dish I have never had the equal of.) It may be forty five years since I last saw him but he is part of the world that I carry within me, in my memory and my dreams. It does not surprise me to learn that he was such an accomplished man in so many ways. He had a great warmth and carried himself with aplomb. My condolences to his lovely family.
