Aileen Dixon Rains

Aileen Dixon Rains passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, the 9th of January 2025, surrounded by family. She was 84 years of age.
Aileen was born in Houston, Texas on 17th of December 1940, to Aileen Thorstenberg Dixon and Thomas Kenney Dixon, Jr. A fifth generation Houstonian, she attended Kinkaid School before graduating from Lamar High School in 1958 and attending the University of Houston.
Aileen was a lifetime member of St. Martins Episcopal Church and River Oaks Country Club. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Order of the Eastern Star, and San Jacinto Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
In addition to being appointed by Governor William P. Clements to the Battleship Texas Advisory Board, where she served as Vice Chairman, Aileen also served on numerous civic boards and charitable organizations, including Past Chair of the Baylor 10; Lifetime member of Partnership for Baylor College of Medicine; Lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and past member of the Ladies Go Texan Committee, the Cluckers poultry auction buying group and the Grand Club; Past President of Child Advocates Guild; docent for the Houston Heritage Society; and Assistance League of Houston.
In addition to her family, Aileen loved playing Mah-Jongg and cards as well as traveling the globe with family and friends.
Aileen was preceded in death by her parents, Aileen Thorstenberg Dixon and Thomas Kenney Dixon, Jr.; her much beloved son-in-law, Nicholas Arthur Waters; and former husband, Jack Morris Rains.
She is survived by her much-loved children, Sharon Rains Whitus and husband Brad; Misti Rains-Waters; and Thomas Kenney Dixon Rains and wife Kelly; her eight grandchildren, Hunter Arthur Waters, Jacqueline Aileen Waters, Holden Rains Waters, Jack Thomas Dixon Rains, Mariah Kenney Whitus, Anne Christine Whitus, Michael Ryan Mitchell, and Heather Elizabeth Mitchell; three great-grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Storey, Caden Michael Veliz, and Cilus Hayes; two much beloved sisters Kenney Dixon Pickens and husband John, and Linda Anne Dixon; and numerous other family and friends.
We would like to thank her friend and companion Susan Murray and her beloved housekeeper Sylvia Jimenez for their many years of unwavering support.
Her family is eternally grateful for the loving care she received from Vanessa Bibbins, Germaine Stevenson, Miaya Martin, Tosha Howard, Ana Velazquez, Omolola Santiago, Doris Akpu, Angela Davis, Mary Ayofe, and Crystal LaBant.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Friday, the 24th of January, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Saturday, the 25th of January, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family and share remembrances during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons.
The family will gather for a private inurnment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Aileen's name be directed to the National Fragile X Foundation by visiting online at
