Alberta Phillips Obituary

Alberta Ruth
Rogers Phillips was born in Grampian, Pennsylvania on November 3, 1934 to Willoughby and Eleanor Rogers and passed away on July 29, 2013 in Houston, Texas, her home for the last 31years.
Ruth was a most consummate spouse, mother, grandmother and friend. She exuded love to all she met.
After graduating from Clearfield High School in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, she moved to San Francisco to live with an orphaned high school friend. She worked for Lloyds of London and attended college. Wanting to find a way to be able to return to Grampian on a regular basis, she opted to join American Airlines as a flight attendant.
After her training, she was posted to the American Airlines base in Dallas, Texas, where she met her future husband, Hugh Phillips. They were married on August 3, 1957 in Shreveport, Louisiana where they lived for a year before starting on a series of moves together - Amarillo, El Paso, back to Shreveport, Memphis, Los Angeles, back to Dallas and finally, in 1982 to Houston.
Ruth had three lovely children, Will Hugh Phillips IV of Marietta, Georgia, Kay Phillips House of Houston and Diane Ruth Phillips of The Brookwood Community, Brookshire, Texas.
Ruth and Hugh enjoyed a 56 year love affair and shared many interests including music, dancing and travel. Ruth was an enormous aid and partner to Hugh's career. After retiring, they had the great joy of traveling together to many parts of the globe - experiences they cherished.
While being the quintessential mother to all three children, she will be most remembered by those who knew her well for her heroic efforts to care for and nurture her daughter Diane, who was significantly handicapped at age four by an attack of encephalitis. Her love and efforts to help Diane are of epic proportions.
Ruth was a very active volunteer. She gave of herself to many causes, including the Cub Scouts, PTA and youth sports while her children were young. She was a most active member of the Brookwood Volunteers and served on many committees, including the Brookwood Volunteer's Benefit Luncheon - a major fund raising effort. She served as co-chairman of a highly successful Benefit in 2002.
She also enjoyed being active in the Kiwi Club, an association of former American Airlines flight attendants which is active in charitable endeavors. She also worked for some years in the American Airlines Sales Department after retiring from flying.
Her most enjoyable and fulfilling volunteer efforts were at her church, Chapelwood United Methodist Church. She worked in the Kitchen Ministry, the Funeral Guild and on a number of other committees as well as serving as a member of the Board of Stewards.
Ruth is also survived by a sister, Judy MacNamara, brothers Kenneth Rogers, Roy Rogers, Harry Rogers, granddaughters Barbara Ruth Phillips, Drew Ellen Phillips, Martha Phillips House, grandson Howard Wesley House, Jr., daughter-in-law Nancy Poole Phillips, son-in-law Howard Wesley House, sister-in-law Margaret Phillips Hunter and Robert Philip Hunter.
In lieu of memorial flowers, the family would appreciate a memorial in Ruth's name to The Brookwood Community, Brookshire, Texas or The Chapelwood Foundation.
A memorial service celebrating Ruth will be held Friday at 11 o'clock AM at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, Houston, Texas. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.

My wife Patty and I last saw Ruth a couple of years ago in Houston as we were visiting our good friends, Bob and Norma Holbritter. Ruth and Hugh looked fantastic. We drank great wine, told war stories and enjoyed a night we remember so well. We are thankful to have such a great lasting memory of the last time we were with Ruth. She and Hugh were one of the best examples we ever saw regarding commitment to family, friends, and to each other.

For me Ruth was the embodiment of Southern Hospitality. When my mom passed away I brought my Dad to visit his cousin, Hugh, to cheer him up. Ruth insisted we stay with them for several days and while there Ruth cooked up feasts for every meal. I couldn't figure out how she found the time or energy as they took us out each day to visit Diane and see NASA Space Center. How she took care of us!

Ruth was my friend from Western PA. When we learned that we both had our roots there, we shared that bond fondly with stories and jokes and plans of traveling back to our home state. Ruth was the epitome of grace and kindness, and my life was richer for having known her. Thank you Phillips family, for sharing Ruth with us at Brookwood. She made a difference indeed.

I always had such respect for my Aunt Ruth. She was so well-poised -- so well-spoken -- and so genuinely gracious. I particularly adored her story-telling abilities. She could weave a tale so well, and have such fun relating it! She had a remarkable joy in living and had such a positive and healthy outlook on life. She made so many people feel very special and happy. Her memory of all she was will live on in her friends and family forever.
