I was fortunate enough to sing for the folks at BLANCO`S last night (8-6-2009) The dream lives on. I never knew Barry until last night. I received an introduction the moment I walked through the door, even though we lost him over two years ago. Country Music lovers should be so thankful to Barry and all the fine folks at Blanco`s.

So many people have been talking about Barry, he and Blancos are legendary. I didn't go very often & missed him when he wasn't there, the music and crowd always seemed more festive when he was around. My dad was also a doc, when we met I remember a toast he made to "good medicine" as he grinned with a little sparkle in his eye. A friend wrote a song about how she hopes they have guitars in Heaven, wish we'd made it to the service. Another friend just reminded me of how much fun we had with Barry the last time Clay Blaker played, and others we might not see again, and that we should get out more often. My dad, who would not go to funerals, said pay our respects while we're still alive and able! He is leaving mucho many good memories.

I think that I may have been Barry's 1st girlfriend. We met at Lamar during summer school. He was so sweet and endearing even at the age of 15.I had "skipped" a grade,a common practice at the time and probably felt so much more sophisticated than Barry.I wasn't but I'm sure I felt that way.
Barry gave me a beautiful pin for my birthday that I still wear. It's a lovely gold iris or orchid, with a small pearl in the center of the bloom.

I ran into Ernest at the Galleria, years after we had all married. At that time, Barry was doing graduate work in AZ or NM.I'm just sorry I never knew about Blanco's. Otherwise,we would have been there.

With condolences to the DeBakey family,

It was with great sadness that I recently learned of Barry DeBakey's passing. Over the 30 years that I worked for Dr. Michael DeBakey, I was fortunate to have had contact with Barry. He always had a big hug and smile for me and I will never forget him. He was always so considerate and thoughtful and always took time to visir.

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Dr. and Mrs. Michael DeBakey, Olga DeBakey, Dr. Lois and Miss Selma DeBakey and to Barry's son and to all the DeBakey's.

When Hondo's closed many years ago, the regulars were thrilled to have it reopen as Blanco's. Barry welcomed our motley crew with open arms and embraced the Hondo's traditions. Under Barry’s ownership, that little lot on West Alabama became a Houston legend and a jumping point for many talented musicians.
It didn’t matter if you hadn’t stopped in for 10 years or more, Barry knew you were there and welcomed you “home” again. Deepest condolences to the DeBakey family and the Blanco’s family and friends.

To the DeBakey Family:

It is only recently that I leaarned of Barry's death. It has been many years since I last saw Barry however I reflect on the good times. Back then we belonged to the same cultural and social organization, bowled in the same bowling league and had many mutual friends. We had lots of good times at Blanco's. It saddened me to hear of his death.

I remember when Barry first bought Blanco's (remember when it was Hondo's?) and saved it from closing. What a great guy he was! I know an FFF used to be a traditional birthday drink but, will somebody please order one in Barry's memory for me? I wonder if there's two-steppin' in Heaven.....

Dear Barry,

We were supposed to see you at lunch today. You were never without a big smile and friendly greeting at all of our lunch meetings organized by HBen to renew old highschool and college friendships. You made Blanco's a great place for things like that. Instead, today I heard some of your family and friends talk about your many fine qualities and tell happy or funny stories about you and your life. You are missed by many. May you rest in peace and God bless your soul.

I only met Barry once but he left me with a lasting impression and it is a memory I will always cherish. His brother Ernest and I were very close friends. My thoughts and prayers go to the DeBakey family and the Blanco's family. May you rest in peace Barry!!! God Bless!!!

Barry,
Knowing you was the greatest and memories treasured. I selfishly wish we had more time. Everytime I walk into your old travel trailer, I will think of you and of the laughter we shared. You found the humor and best in all situations... Thanks for all the Blanco's experiences, for your generousity and kindness. You will be greatly missed. You never stopped giving - from hosting our many BBQs at Blanco's to your visits to my place in San Leon.
Prayers for peace and strength for your family and all the Blanco staff...

Dear Dr. DeBakey and Family,

It saddens my heart to hear of Barry's passing--he far too young. My fondest memories of Barry go back to the times that his sweet mother was living--as you know, she was a dear friend of my own beloved mother.I was always moved by Barry's kindness and devotion to her. Barry, clearly, was one who understood and lived the principle that "we walk through this life, but once, and therefore, any good that I may do, let me do it now." My mother always said that the mark of a person was whether or not they were too busy to be kind--Barry was never too busy.

Barry, you are remembered and will be missed.

With deepest sympathy and love,
Regina Pappas Seale

I never was much of a dancer when I went to Blanco's to enjoy the company and music. But every so often Barry would grab my wrist and make me dance with him. It was a "chore" I'll always remember.

Barry,
You will be greatly missed. You created something in this world that can never be matched. You created a place that influenced many friendships, many with people that didn't really have much in common. But that was you, you would talk and befriend anyone. You were so charitable, whether it was FFA or other organizations around Houston. And oh Barry could you dance, twirling women around every girl want to dance with you. You were so kind hearted, and sweet. There will never be another like you. BARRY WE LOVE AND MISS YOU!!!!
