Bobby Alford Obituary

Bobby Ray Alford, M.D.
1932-2018
Bobby Ray Alford, M.D., passed away on Tuesday, the 20th of February 2018. In the course of a courageous struggle with diffuse Lewy body disease, he succumbed to pneumonia developed after a hip fracture. Bobby was born on the 30th of May 1932, in Dallas, Texas to Bryant Johnny and Edith Marie Garrett Alford. He graduated cum laude from Tyler Junior College, attended the University of Texas at Austin, and earned his M.D. with Honor from Baylor College of Medicine. Bobby completed his internship and residency at Jefferson Davis Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He then completed a fellowship in otology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas and was an NIH special fellow in neurophysiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Bobby was board certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1962.
Bobby joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in 1962. For more than 40 years, he served as professor and chairman of the department that now bears his name, the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. Bobby also served as chief of the otolaryngology services at Houston Methodist, St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Harris County Hospital District, and Texas Children's Hospital. During his tenure at Baylor College of Medicine, Bobby was executive vice president and dean of medicine, distinguished service professor, program director of the otolaryngology residency training program, and held the Olga Keith Wiess Chair of Otorhinolaryngology and Communicative Sciences and the Friedkin Chair for Research in Sensory System Integration and Space Medicine. His leadership extended to numerous academic, medical, scientific, professional, and philanthropic organizations, including the Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation, the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations, the John S. Dunn Foundation, and the DeBakey Medical Foundation. Bobby also served as interim chairman of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery after Dr. DeBakey's retirement. From 1997 to 2017, he was chairman of the board of directors of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute in Houston, Texas, during which time he also served 14 years as chief executive officer. From 2004 to 2010, he was chancellor of Baylor College of Medicine.
A consummate academic physician, Bobby was a skilled surgeon, talented teacher, and successful researcher. He pioneered many innovative treatments and procedures that remain a standard in otolaryngology today. During his career, Bobby trained hundreds of young physicians and researchers who have gone on to successful and impactful careers throughout the United States and around the world. He published more than 170 articles, chapters and books, and delivered countless lectures and presentations. Bobby served as chief editor of Archives of Otolaryngology, was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and was president of the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Board of Otolaryngology, and the American Council of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. He was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. He received the Association of Operating Room Nurses of Greater Houston Distinguished Surgeon Award, the Baylor College of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus and Lifetime Achievement Awards, the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism, presidential citations from the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery, and the Triological Society, the NSBRI Pioneer Award, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Jeffries Aerospace Medicine and Life Sciences Research Award, and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. In 2012, Baylor College of Medicine established the Bobby R. Alford, M.D. Educational Center in his honor.
Bobby had an unwavering commitment to excellence. He was devoted to his patients, cherished time spent with colleagues, students, residents and fellows, and delighted in the ongoing success of those with whom he was connected.
Bobby was an avid outdoorsman and yachtsman, enjoying many years sailing on Galveston Bay. An accomplished sailboat racer, he competed in many different classes of boats, including Ensigns and Solings. Bobby spent his later years cruising and motorboating along the Texas coast. His love for the outdoors and competitive sailing was passed on to all three of his children. After being a member at the Houston Yacht Club for many years, Bobby joined Texas Corinthian Yacht Club and later Lakewood Yacht Club, serving terms as fleet surgeon at both clubs. In 2007, Texas Corinthian Yacht Club bestowed the recognition of Honorary Commodore on Bobby for his years of distinguished service to the club.
Bobby was devoted to his family and many close friends. Bobby was preceded in death by his parents Bryant Johnny and Edith Marie Garrett Alford, and his sister Patsy Alford Scott and brother-in-law Dr. Daniel E. Scott. He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Othelia, his children Brad (Donna Baker), Raye and Scott (Tommie Divine) Alford, his grandchildren Brice, Savannah and Linleigh Alford, his nieces Debbie Lane, Pam (Bill) Shown and Holly (Lee) Francois, his grandnieces Jordan (Trevor) Pounds, Taylor (Ross) Bolen, Cody Shown and Sydney Roland, his grandnephew Will Shown, and his great grandniece Avery Pounds.
The family thanks Dr. Donald T. Donovan and the physicians, nurses and staff at Houston Methodist for their devotion and care during this difficult period, including Dr. Joseph C. Masdeu, Dr. James E. Muntz, Dr. Albert E. Raizner, and Debbi Cotie, R.N. The family also thanks Maria Contreras and all the caregivers from Uptown Homecare for their dedicated and compassionate care.

Here is another story: Dr. Alford was always very hard on the residents. However, I learned on graduation day that it was all an act to make us stronger. My graduation year, each of the chiefs graduating were roasted by one of the fourth year residents. When I was roasted, Brett Cordes told some of the stories of Dr. Alford giving me a hard time for absolutely irrelevant things- for being 2 minutes late to morning meeting, for not properly cleaning up a juice spill, for the order in which I turned on lights in the morning. And these were moments when Dr. Alford was at his most terrifying. The room starts laughing, and I turn to look at Dr. Alford's reaction. Well, he is laughing so hard that his eyes are watering and his face is red. He was laughing harder than the first row at a Jerry Seinfeld concert. At that moment, I finally understood what he was trying to teach us: to be strong and to always be our best. You have to get the small things right in order to get the big things right. Very wise and very true.

When I contacted him out of the blue from the UK with a question about actinomyces in my tonsils Dr Alford took time out of his busy life to send a message back to me. I was very grateful to him and have never forgotten how kind he was to do this at a time when I had been very ill and needed answers and support. He was a wonderful man.

RIP dear friend. You made a difference in this world!

To say Dr. Alford was a giant in our specialty is an understatement! He MADE our specialty of Otolaryngology/ Head and Neck Surgery!
Dr. Alford interviewed me for medical school in 1965 and accepted me to Baylor College of Medicine and for our residency program.
I will be eternally grateful to Dr. Alford for a vocation and for endowing my chair in Performing Arts Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital.
I share this great loss with the entire medical community and with his extraordinary family and many patients.

As a registered nurse in the operating room for over fifty years, I had the honor and privilege to work with many outstanding surgeons. Working with Dr Bobby Alford at the Methodist Hospital was one of the highlights of my career. I knew of his reputation and expertise when I came to work in Houston. He was an outstanding surgeon dedicated to his patients and a real friend to the profession of nursing. He always treated us as part of the team. He expected excellence and gave the same. We will miss you and
send love and prayers to your family.

I printed this picture for Dr. Alford. He loved his friend and colleague, Dr. DeBakey.

It was my great honor to be part of Dr. Alford's life and work life before he retired from NSBRI, NASA, and Baylor College of Medicine. I will be forever grateful to have met and worked with Dr. Alford and attend the last meetings of his career with him. I always told him he was the highlight of my career, he would always laugh and would not believe me, I assured him he was. Dr. Alford, I will never forget you! Thank you for all of the life lessons I learned from you. I will miss you very much.

Dear Othelia, Brad, Muffin and Scott, our love and prayers are with you as you mourn this wonderful man. We first met Dr Bobby Alford when his insurance was transferred to our State Farm agency. After a short time at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr Alford showed up at the office to transfer his business back because Houston was home. Over the years the Alfords became like family. Most of the business was handled by Othelia and it is always a delight to talk to her about the cars, the houses, the kids and the sailboats. In the eighties, Bobby and Othelia took us and our youngest son sailing in Galveston Bay on their beautiful sailboat. Dr Alford treated both of us at the BCM Neurosensory Center. His knowledge and expertise were obvious as was his dry wit.
We pray that God will hold you in his hands as you go through the difficult days ahead and bring you peace.

BEREAVEMENT

I tucked a piece of myself away in your heart
While you weren't looking,
And now you have taken it away with you.
The grief that I feel
Is not for the part of me that is gone,
But for the rest of me that remains behind.

It has been an absolute pleasure to know and work for such a generous man. Dr. Alford and his department at Baylor were responsible to issuing me my very first check as a teenager. I later returned to Baylor in 2014 and once again had the pleasure of working with him again. Dr. Alford, you will be missed and your legacy and hard work will live on through the countless residents & medical students you have taught and mentored. My thoughts and prayers are with the Alford family and extended family.

I am with a heavy heart mourning the loss of Dr. Bobby R. Alford. Dr. Alford served as a faculty member in the Department of Otolaryngology at Baylor College of Medicine for over 50 years, and was Chairman for the vast majority of them. He is the Chair under whom I trained. I will never forget the phone call I received from him the day that I received my letter of passage from the American Board of Otolaryngology. I could not believe that he took the time to do that- to administer that kind of a personal touch and demonstrate that level of care after how hard he drove all of us in residency. But he did it to make us all the best physicians we could be, and through doing so, he inspired generations of towering and influential leaders that will carry his legacy for decades to come.

His estimable contributions to the Texas Medical Center are surpassed only by those of his close friend Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Together, they changed the world. It is impossible to fully describe the impact that Dr. Alford had on not only the field of Otolaryngology, but on the entire practice of medicine. His dedication to patients was unparalleled, and his absolute insistence on excellence was unsurpassed. Even now, nearly 10 years out of residency, I still think of how I would present a patient to Dr. Alford, and if he would approve of the care I am providing. It forever shaped the doctor that I am.

May he rest in peace, and may his family and friends and all those whose lives were touched by him find comfort. All of our lives are better for his existence, and the entire world has lost a little for his passing.
