Dear Kim, Donna, and Bobby Jr.,
On behalf of the Ugly Angel family, please accept my heartfelt condolences on the occasion of Bobby’s untimely passing. Like you members of his natal family, all of us Angels were praying that somehow Bobby would receive the organ he so desperately needed and recover sufficiently to join us at another reunion. Sadly, it was not to be.
Though Bobby has left us to join his beloved Lynda, he will live always in our memory as the outstanding Ugly Angel, heroic Marine, and warm human being that he was. Nearly every Angel who served in the squadron in the late sixties has cherished memories of Bobby.
For my part, I recall his calm professionalism during a medical evacuation mission for the ROK Marines in the spring of 1967. The zone was a maelstrom of fire, the AK-47 rounds ripping into our helicopter, and wounded Koreans being re-wounded as they were placed in the cabin. Throughout Bobby kept his cool and, though our landing gear was damaged by fire, guided us safely out of the zone and back to Ky Ha.
The Johns family lost a beloved father. The Ugly Angels have lost a beloved brother.
We share the depths of your grief – and the joy of knowing that Bobby has gone to a better place.
Sincerely,
Tom Hewes

In 1968, while in the "Uglies," I came to know Bobby as an exemplary Marine, and a great person to serve with. Needless to say, many of us also looked up to him. Our world is better because of him.

Bobby was the skinny Marine in the tool room -- always in good humour, always with a grin, always ready to go the extra mile to get the job done right. And his attitude hadn't changed in 1998 or so, when Ben Cascio and I took him along to change the fuel pump on Moriarty's 34 so we could fly it to Yuma.
We miss you, Bobby.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his children and grandchildren for their loss. We all will miss his quick wit, his southern drawl and his smile. He was part of our squadron and will remain forever in our hearts. But most of all, I believe that he made each of us feel like he was our best friend.

I worked in the S-4 of HMM 362 from December 1967 to January 1969 and although I did not know Bobby personally, I knew of him. He was known throughout the squadron as a hero. The few times our paths did cross, he was always friendly and had a smile that brightened the darkest of days. I offer my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

Bobby Johns was one of the bravest Marines I had the honor of serving with over a 22 year career. He and "Doc" Jones made a magnificent pair. Bobby was an inspiration to all who served with him. I want to offer my sincere condolences to Bobby's family and friends and assure you that his extended Marine family grieves as well.

Bobby Johns HMM-362
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It is with great sadness that I have to advise that our good friend & fellow Ugly Angel, Bobby Johns, passed on to the Big LZ on 4December06. He died peacefully in the company of his three children Kim, Donna & Bobby Jr,. happily looking forward to joining his beloved wife Lynda.
He & his children have always spoken of his love for, & their appreciation to, the squadron for supporting him through these last difficult years of illness. He fought like the great Marine he was. Bobby Johns was the first Sgt. in VN to be promoted in the field to 2dLt, & did 3 consecutive 13 month tours in VN with HMM-362. He will be missed.

Bobby
was a valued squadron mate in Vietnam. As far as I know he voluntarily
served there longer than anyone else that I ever heard of. That was
pretty continuously in the Ugly Angels, HMM-362, from mid 66 through
mid 69. During that time he moved from PFC to 2nd Lieutenant. He was a
crew chief and was awarded the bronze star for bravery.
He was also a leader in our later years as an officer and board member
of the Ugly Angel Memorial Foundation. He will be profoundly missed .
He was a great guy with a great personality. We're all very sad about
his passing.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Bobby. As a child some of my fondest memories are of spending my childhood summers with him and Jimmy at their parents house. Tagging along with my older cousins for a ride in their Mustang was a big highlight. Bobby was always an inspiration to me, he always had a smile for those around him.
