CHARLES CHIEN Obituary

CHARLES F. CHIEN was born on June 2, 1917 in Shanghai, China. There, he graduated from St. John's University in 1937 and earned his post-graduate degree from Harvard University. He moved to New York City where he met Viola Wong and on June 11, 1950, they were married.In 1961, they moved to Houston, where he was an executive at Westland Oil Development Corporation until he retired in 1982. He was active in the Chinese Professional Club, where he was instrumental in establishing a permanent endowed scholarship for deserving Chinese students. He has been an active member and officer of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church.He was a generous, sweet man with a wonderful sense of humor.He passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 22.He is survived by his wife, son Loring, daughter-in-law Mae, granddaughter Alyssa and her husband Brian Grade, grandson Jeffrey, and daughter Regina Chien-Ertl.Memorial services: Tuesday, July 27 at 1P.M., Parkway Place, 1321 Park Bayou Dr., Houston 77077Thursday July 29 at 1 P.M., Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Dr., Houston 77024In lieu of flowers we are requesting donations be made to:CPC Scholarship Fund Inc,c/o James Tang13106 Sycamore HeightsHouston, Texas 77065Please indicate it's in memory of Charles F. I didn't know Mr. Chien or his family but was most impressed by the information posted about him. I would have liked to have known him. My family lived in his home country for a while in the late 1980/early 1990s. To his family... I am very sorry for your loss as well as others whose lives he touched.

I worked with Mr. Chien at Westland Oil and still have vivid memories of his humor and his dedication to Mr. Kung. To be a part of that wonderful time at Westland is something I will always treasure. Mr. Chien was special.
