Charles Mitts Obituary

SSG CHARLES CLAYTON MITTS passed away at 8:56 pm Wednesday evening due to injuries received during a Blackhawk helicopter crash on January 12, 2009.Charlie is survived by his very loving wife Kristi as well as his children, Caitlyn, age 16, Andrew, age 14 and Catherine, age 5. Following the services, Charlie will be buried at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Charlie led two professional lives and excelled at both. As a soldier, Charlie started his military career in June of 1986 as a Calvary Scout and later became a Blackhawk crewchief. During that time he served in two wars and received several honors and distinctions. Some, but certainly not all, of the awards he earned were the Air Medal, Army Achievement medal (3rd award), Iraq Campaign Medal and Aircraft Crewman Badge. And during his latest tour, Charlie was selected to be one of the personal crewmembers for General Petraeus who was the Commanding General, Multi-National Force Iraq (MNF-I). Other significant events which Charlie was a part of; the Space Shuttle Discovery recovery, relief efforts for Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Ike and numerous other natural disasters. Charlie was also a Police Officer, and had a long and illustrious career in that profession. He started off as a Police Officer in Harker Heights, TX. During that time, among other things, he worked undercover vice and was a member of the SWAT unit. After September 11, 2009, Charlie applied and was accepted into the Federal Air Marshals. While employed by them, he worked several assignments to include Counter Terrorism as part of a joint venture between the Federal Air Marshalls and the FBI. During Charlie's time as an agent, he was one of the first task force agents to ever receive the Robert Mueller Directors award for excellence. And as if that were not enough for any one person, Charlie was also active in several police professional organizations and was instrumental in developing a working relationship between these groups. SSG and Agent Charles Mitts led a very full life that touched many. His personality was infectious and there was never any question about his dedication to duty or his honor. Charlie will not only be missed by his family but also by the thousands of people who respected him and called him friend. America, and the world, has lost a true professional and hero. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from six until nine o'clock in the evening on Wednesday, the 21st of January with a Rosary service scheduled to begin at eight o'clock in the Morrow Chapel at The Settegast Kopf Co. at Sugar Creek. Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at twelve o'clock noon on Thursday, the 22nd of January at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 7810 Cypresswood Drive, with Rev. Charles J. Samperi, celebrant. Interment with full military honors to follow immediately at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veteran's Memorial Drive. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being set up in Charles' name. Dear Kristi, Caitlyn, Andrew, Catherine, and all of Charlie's family,

Please accept my sincere condolences in the loss of your husband, dad, and brother. May each of you find peace in knowing that many are praying for you and that Charlie is with his Heavenly Father.

The memorial service was a beautiful, touching service. Each one who took part showed so much love and admiration for Charlie. I'm so glad that I attended.

I first met Charlie when he and my daughter began to date in 1985. He had just turned 19. It wasn't long afterward that Charlie was without a place to live. So, he moved in with my family for about six months. While Charlie lived with us, he was always a joy to be around, and was always polite and helpful. I knew he had great potential.

Over the years, we lost touch with Charlie, but would occasionally see something in the local paper about him or learn something from a family friend. I'm so pleased to know what a wonderful man he became. His dad would sure be proud of him. I know that I am. What a tremendous impact he made on the lives of so many. I am very saddened by his passing and very proud to have known him. He will truly be missed by many.

God bless and comfort each of you and all those who knew and loved Charlie.

FROM MRS. CHARLES MITTS...I just wanted to thank everyone who has expressed their sympathy for our families loss. Charles and I were together for almost 6 years. I can truly say he was a wonderful husband and provider to me and a blessing in my life and a wonderful friend to me. I have a strong business background and plan to keep a foundation in rememberence of his name, and will offer scholarships to students who may want to enter into law enforcement.

Charles and I were truly soulmates and the greatest honor I have ever had was being his wife. He will forever live on with the law enforcement community as well as the military. And of course always in my heart.

The children have been taken care of.

Thank you also to the Military the FBI, the Patroit Riders, the Honor Guard and of course Harker Heights Police department as well as Harris County Sherrifs Department for making his funeral such and honoarble event.

A special thanks to all the dignitaries who attended and sent condolances.

And to those of you...the unseen, unheard and unafarid...thank you for providinng me with the best possible of care. I will always have a speical place in my heart for all of you.

Thank you,
Mrs. Charles (Kristi) Mitts

I was so saddened to hear the news about Charlie. What a true friend and hero he was to everyone that crossed paths with him. I knew Charlie when he was an officer at HHPD but lost touch several years ago. Charlie was a person who certainly left a footprint of kindness on your heart after you met him. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his loved ones. I'm so sorry for your loss.

What a wonderful man who will truly be missed. I met Charlie working in our law enforcement jobs during the Superbowl in 2002. We became instant friends and getting to know him made the long evenings bearable. We lost touch after his deployment in 2006 and was heart broken to hear of his death. He often talked about his children and the time he spent with them. My heart, thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and children. God Bless you during this time.

I just wanted to say that your entire family is in my prayers and how proud I am to have known Charlie. I have known Charlie since 1985. I had met him through my girlfriend Shelby. Charlie and I dated for almost four years. He was a kind, sensitive, wonderful man and from what I have read, he still was after all these years. Every one he has encountered should consider themselves truly blessed. I will always remember him fondly and I know I will see him again soon. God bless all of you!

I met Charlie In November, we both won Chevy Race day tickets. I had been going through a really rough time. I saw Charlie in his Uniform, I spoke to him and thanked him for his service. We just started talking and He started telling me about his family and how his wife could not make the trip. His eyes just sparkled as he talked of his wife and children. We had so much fun riding the track. He made a point that day to stay by me so I would feel safe. On Sunday when I went back to the race. We ran into each other again. He was like a kid in a candy shop. He had the biggest grin on his face as he told me what all Chevy had done for him to honor his Military Service. My heart grieves for his wife and children just in the two days I was around him he made a big impression on me what an awesome man he was. I know that this country, friends and his family grieve for the loss of a Hero, friend, husband and father! My prayers are with ya'll.
