Dan Moody Obituary

Dan McMillan Moody Jr.
06/19/1941 - 10/10/2025
Dan McMillan Moody Jr. passed away peacefully on October 10, 2025, while on vacation in Woodstock, Vermont. He was born on June 19, 1941, at Saint Joseph's Hospital, Houston, Texas. He was the firstborn and son of Dan McMillan Moody, Sr. and Florence Hedrick Moody.
Dan attended Lanier Middle School and Lamar High School where he graduated in 1959. He was a member of the State Championship Swim Team while at Lamar. He also made many lifelong friends during those years. He went on to study at the University of Texas from 1959 to 1963 where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He married his wife, Mary Austin Moody, while at the University. They welcomed their beloved son, Dan McMillan Moody III in 1964.
He will be remembered for his entrepreneurial presence, his kind and generous spirit, and his complete love and adoration for his wife, family, and friends. He especially enjoyed working with his father and brothers in the early years and, most recently, with his son, Dan III, brother, John Sr. and nephews, John Jr., Joe L., and Dan T.
In 1969, Dan and Howard Rambin III founded Moody Rambin Interests where he enjoyed a long and successful career. The firm, now with over 100 employees, recently marked its 50th anniversary. It began with townhouse development before expanding to commercial development, primarily office buildings. During the 1980's and 1990's his firm successfully developed four major office parks located and adjacent to executive housing. These parks included Post Oak Park, Town & Country Office Park, Dairy Ashford Place and Northwest Park. Many of the buildings featured atriums, which the firm pioneered in Houston. During the 1990's the firm undertook the redevelopment of Town & Country Village Shopping Center which had been built by Dan M. Moody, Sr. in the late 1960's. This 400,000 square foot property is still owned and managed by Moody Rambin. During the 1990's Dan M. Moody III joined his father in the business and was pivotal in the redevelopment of Town & Country Village and a large number of ongoing industrial, retail, and office projects as well as residential communities.
Dan's keen interest in innovative medical procedures, political issues, and world events contributed to his dynamic personality. He was known for clipping and accumulating news articles of related significance concerning these issues. Traveling the world was a favorite pastime of his, including ventures across the Americas, vacations in Hawaii, Africa, and Europe.
Dan Jr. was a founding member of Scenic Houston, a major donor of the Republican party, a contributing member of the Methodist Hospital Foundation, the Brookwood Community, both the Houston and the National Parks Board, several health, human, nature, animal, children, medical, and educational causes. He ardently supported local, state, and national political elections.
Dan Jr. is survived by his former wife, Mary Austin Moody, their son, Dan M. Moody III and his wife, Kimberlin B. Moody, and their daughter, Makell Ainsley Moody, Stepson, Houston Van Eman, Grandson, Parker McMillan Gonzales, brother, John S. Moody, Sr. and wife Eileen.
Nieces and nephews include John S. Moody Jr. and wife, Rachel, Joe L. Moody and wife, Keri, Dan T. Moody and wife, Ann, George Moody Jr. and wife, Tricia, Mike Moody and wife, Laurie, Mary Lile and husband, Tom, and son-in-law, Carlos Gonzales and wife, Tamara. Cousins include Susan Moody Fuqua, Judy Ley Allen, and Susan Ley Espinosa.
Dan was proceeded in death by his parents, Florence and Dan Moody, Sr., his brother, George R. Moody, and wife Marsha Moore Moody, Sara Fergus Moody and their daughter, Leah Fergus Moody and Lynn Elizabeth Moody, his companion, champion, confidant and loving wife.
All who know Dan will dearly miss him. He touched the lives of so many people and special friends including the members of his "Lunch Bunch," Don Connelly, Sandy and Tommie Soriero, and his faithful assistant, Stella M. Dow.
Friends are cordially invited to a Celebration of Life for Dan Jr. to be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at River Oaks Country in the Main Dining Room.
