Francine Meyer Obituary

Francine Furlow Meyer
1947-2021
Francine Furlow Meyer died at home on September 18, 2021 from complications of breast cancer. She was a fourth-generation Houstonian born on May 27, 1947, to Mary Joyce Johnson and Caston Frank Furlow. Francine and her little brother, Pete, grew up with their parents in Houston's Timbergrove neighborhood. A life-long member of the United Methodist Church, she was baptized at Collins UMC in the Heights. She attended Love Elementary School, Hamilton Junior High School, Heights High School (formerly Reagan High School), Southwestern University, and Southern Methodist University. At Southwestern, she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha fraternity, an organization that was dear to her throughout her life.
While in drama class at Southwestern, Francine met Jonathan Lee Thrasher. Following graduation, the two married and moved to Dallas so Jon could attend seminary at SMU. Francine served as a preacher's wife at three United Methodist churches in Houston; Bering, Fairhaven, and Oakwood where they welcomed their two daughters, Andrea and Courtney.
Francine returned to Bering UMC as a single mom with her two young girls. Soon, she met Gary Lynn Meyer and his son, Philip. As the story goes, Gary was instructed to take his young son to church. He decided on the church across the street, Bering UMC. After the two dated for a couple of years, Francine had her girls perform Gypsy's "If Mama Was Married" in the church talent show. The rest, as they say, is history.
Francine and Gary's blended family immediately expanded when their son, Cass, was born less than two years after they married. The two loved their family, traveling, visiting Gary's family in Iowa, doting on their grandchildren, attending events with the Rotary Club of the Houston Heights, sailing, attending church at St. Luke's UMC, pool parties, the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, visiting with dear neighbors, and holidays. Holidays were magical and spirited events in the Meyer home, especially Christmas Eve. Every day was Easter in Francine's home with bunnies for every occasion and in every corner of the house. She was surrounded by the things she loved until her last day.
For almost 40 years, Francine and Gary lived in Candlelight Plaza where they were members of the civic association. Francine followed in her dad's footsteps as an active member of the Special Children's Committee of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 30+ years. She was a devoted member of the Houston Alumnae Association of Zeta Tau Alpha where she received the Lone Star Award in 2012 and served as President in 2012-2013. In 2016, she received the White Violet pin, signifying 50 years in Zeta Tau Alpha. Over the last six years, she enjoyed volunteering with the Houston Junior Forum. Her water aerobics class at the Dad's Club was a highlight for years. No matter where she went, Francine made life-long friends that will miss her dearly.
Francine held several jobs throughout her life including English and speech teacher, working for beloved Houston pediatrician, Dr. Laura Bickel, and at Biggers Printing Company. When Biggers was sold, she stayed on as comptroller of Brandt & Lawson Printing Company for many years. Later, Francine attended Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and worked for its director in Houston. She received her Master's of Divinity and ministered at several churches including Corrigan UMC and Westbury UMC. Later, she completed the chaplaincy program at Memorial Hermann Hospital and served in that capacity until several months before her death.
Francine is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Lynn Meyer, parents, Mary Joyce and C. F. Furlow, and her little brother, Peter Johnson Furlow. She is survived by her daughter, Andrea Thrasher Steves, and her husband, Commander Frederick Benteen Steves, Jr. (Ben) of Bethesda, MD; her daughter, Mary Courtney Thrasher of Houston, TX; her son, Philip Andrew Culver Meyer, and his wife, Carine Chehab Meyer, of Houston, TX; and her son, Norman Caston Meyer of Austin, TX. Her seven grandchildren thought she was so special, she answered to both Grandmother and Nana. Francine loved them all with her whole heart. She is also survived by grandchildren Frederick Benteen Steves III (Trey), Andrew Thompson Steves and Jackson Fuller Steves of Bethesda, MD; Mary Ellen Whyte and Finn Edward Whyte of Houston, TX; Dean Culver Meyer of Houston, TX; and Caston Scott Meyer of Austin, TX.
A private burial was held late last month at Glenwood Cemetery. There will be a Memorial Service for friends and family to celebrate Francine's life at a future time. Please consider a donation in Francine's honor to Houston Alumnae Association, 7010 Pinefern Lane, Spring TX 77379, or their THINK PINK breast cancer partnership with the American Cancer Society www.ztahouston.org/donate.

My sympathy and prayers go out to all of Francine's family. Although I haven't seen Francine in many years, I remember gathering at her parents home in Timbergrove for MYF meetings and she would join us. I played Little League baseball with her brother Pete.

I thought that I posted a memory a year ago. Apparently either my memory or my computer skills (or lack thereof got the best of me. I met Francine when our daughters Daphne and Andrea became friends at Poe Elementary School. Afterwards, I saw Fran and Gary often at St. Luke's. Often, Fran would visit our business Arrivederci Cafe. Fran offered me her maternity dresses, when I was expecting Ariana. We were "mature" mothers at the time, and had long since dispensed with our original maternity clothes. She had just had Cass. Fran had such energy and charm. She had a wonderful sense of humor. I felt another connection with her: she graduated from Reagan aka Heights High School were many members of my family studied (at an earlier time.) She had a kind heart, and I admired her for attending seminary and dedicating her life to the church. I miss her.

I should have known that Francine passed away when she did not contact me during or after the Army Navy Game. My Father and Mary Joyce dated and went to high school together. When we moved to Houston I was in the 4th grade and we were close family friends with the Furlows. I spent many a Sunday afternoon after church at Collins Methodist at Francine's house, eating my fill and then playing sports with Pete and the neighborhood boys. Francine and I were a couple for several times during 4th-6th grades. Her parents, Mary Joyce and CF, and Francine and all my family were dear friends. If the opportunity ever arises I would love to meet you, Francine's children. I moved to Midland in ninth grade, and our families stayed in touch for all these years. I was her Naval Academy friend! I will miss her deeply! I now live in Asheville, NC. If you make it this way please call me.

Dear Andrea, Courtney, Philip, Cass, and others of your loving family. I am thinking of you all and will always hold you and Francine dear to my heart. I remember Andrea's incredibly fun birthday parties, which Francine worked so hard to make happy, creative, and memorable! I remember a game in which we girls had to identify our moms by only their hands while we were blind-folded. I was so proud I found mine! In another game, we drew pictures in a dark closet and then chuckled over our "masterpieces."This game became a family favorite in my house from then on, and we giggled over many a house not connected to its roof! Francine taught several of us to sing "I feel pretty" for the talent show. What a vibrant and caring person, and what happy memories she gave me! Later, I loved seeing her during pediatric visits with Courtney and grandkids, and I so appreciated that she came to my dad's memorial. Her caring heart touched so many of us, and she will be missed. Sending love and prayers to you all.

Always a part of my life since I can remember. You were there for me in good times and bad. I already miss you terribly. I will always remember your perpetual smile and your sweet, beautiful soul. Many of the loved ones you are with now are my loved ones too. Imagine you all having "Daqueritas", as CF would say, and having a joyous reunion. There will always be a hole in my life with you gone. I imagine Gary is so happy to be with you again. See you on the flip side!

For the family of Francine. May God comfort you and give you strength in this time of sorrow. Rest In Peace to Francine. You are now with your parents and brother Pete. Jesus welcomed you to His Kingdom. You were very vivacious with lots of energy and beauty. You were faithful to God. We went to Collins Methodist church together in the Heights . Her parents and mine were good friends also. Prayers to all

She will be missed but always in our hearts. She was one of the sweetest persons I have known. We spent our early years together and though we lost touch for awhile she was always a beautiful memory.

I am so saddened by the death of Francine. I give my heartfelt sympathy to her children. Andrea was an elementary school friend of my daughter Daphne, and I believe that they have stayed in touch via Facebook. Francine lent me all of her maternity clothes from her pregnancy of Cass to assist me in my pregnancy of Ariana. I feel that due to this we had some sort of connection to each other's children. Ariana, my youngest daughter, was one year behind Cass, and they had some mutual friends and acquaintances. Francine was a very good person, so caring..... She was also friendly and a joy to be around. I will miss her.

Andrea and Courtney

I´m so sorry for your loss! This IS crazy that our mom´s gained their wings just a few days apart! I always loved your mom! So much class and sass! A true southern lady! My mom loved your mom too! Hopefully they are sharing stories right now in heaven! Peace and comfort for you both at this time. You are in our thoughts!
