Sidney (Professor Buchanan, as we called him in our student days) was so much more than an amazing and talented constitutional law professor. His passion for life, learning and celebrating each day was recognized by all who were blessed to know him. He invited anyone who was interested to join him in his office for lunch and discussions about the law, life (both spiritual and earthly), Gilbert & Sullivan plays and anything else we wanted to share. He was loved and respected by all of his students, not just the ones who were fortunate enough to know him personally. He is missed and revered by so many.

Many fond memories of our shared Thanksgivings, seeing Sid perform in a G&S production at Miller Outdoor Theatre and of course witnessing the friendship and camaraderie of Sid, John Mixon and (my Dad) Tom Newhouse. May Sid´s spirit live on through his family, his former students and all those whose lives he touched.

My first meeting with Sid was in a history precept at Princeton in our freshman year, and I was dumbfounded by his total knowledge of the detailed facts of our assigned reading. My admiration of his intellect will last as long as I do.

I have several fond memories of the years that Sidney was neighbor to my parents. They both delighted in meeting him on morning walks with the dog - paper in hand, reading as he strolled. One of my fondest memories of him is from my father´s retirement party, at which Sidney delighted all of us with a song - in his famed tradition - celebrating my father both professionally and as a friend. The two of them loved to get together and talk law, and in later years, when they both were fading, it was a blessing for both of my parents to once again be Sidney´s neighbor at Holly Hall. He was a gift.

From "My Fair Layman" - The Street Where They Give, lyrics by G. Sidney Buchanan:
"People on this street used to laugh at me
They would even throw their pledge-cards torn-in-half at me,
Now the money pours out of all the doors
For I work on the street where they give!"

Regarding Dean McGehee: This lyric. "I only know when he, began to preach to me, I could have pledged, pledged, PLEDGED all night!" He made no apologies to My Fair Lady, or anyone. He never needed to.
