George Douglas Kamins
1927-2022
George Douglas Kamins passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 30, 2022, at the age of 94.
George was born on April 22, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York to Samuel and Ruth (Barsky) Kamins. As a boy, George loved scouting and became an Eagle Scout. He moved to Houston in 1951, where his entrepreneurial spirit thrived.

George was a decorated Captain in the U.S. Army Infantry and proudly served his country in Korea. After the war, he became a pioneer in the automotive and transportation industries. He owned and operated K-Mart automotive centers across the country, employing over 18,000 people. In 1967 he purchased the Yellow Cab Company of Houston, which then operated approximately 80 taxicabs. At the time he sold the business, it was operating approximately 1,400 taxicabs. That same year, George was named president and general manager of Uniroyal Merchandising, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uniroyal, Inc., which operated the company retail stores and provided assistance to the company's 30,000 independent tire dealers.
George loved the life he led," the family said. "He loved his family, careers; both military and business. His love of deep sea fishing, boating and ranching was a passion he shared with his children and grandchildren who have already instilled a love of these hobbies in their children.
George was a loyal and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. George is survived by his children; Ricky Kamins (Robert Collier) of Houston, Janna (Marshall) Wiener of Victoria, Duane ( Anna-Lee) Kamins of Houston, Steven (Lori) Kamins of Houston and Michael (Anna) Kamins of Houston; grandchildren Matthew (Codi) Wiener, Joshua (Laura) Wiener, Brooke (Jeffrey) Wise, Ashley Kamins Jones, Zach Kamins and Andrew Kamins; great grandchildren Madison and Max Wiener, Leighton, Parker and Molly Wiener, Blake and Dylan Wise, Jaxon Jones. He is survived by his beloved sister Betsy Atlas of Houston and nieces Julie Pickett and Cindy Ely. He will be greatly missed by his family.
George had a great love for animals and will be missed by his current companion, a wonderful rescue dog named Bucky.
The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to Annette Francis, George's Personal Assistant, for her many years of loyalty and care. They also thank his loving caregivers, Lynette Hobbs and Maria Vega. A special thanks goes to Laura Williams, his live-in caregiver and wonderful cook for the past five years.
Funeral services will be held at Emanu El Memorial Park, Kagan-Rudy Chapel, 8341 Bissonnet, on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at 3:00 PM.

Out of respect for all in attendance, face masks will be required.
