George Washington Obituary

George R. Washington
1919-2021
George Raft Washington of Houston, Texas died Monday, April 12, 2021 at Memorial Hermann Hospital. George was born August 11, 1919 in Josserand, Texas to Mose and Novella Washington. George lived his early childhood years in Groveton, Texas and moved to Houston with his family as a child. George attended Crawford Elementary and graduated from Phillis Wheatley Senior High School in 1939. George also attended Houston College for Negroes (now Texas Southern University).
George accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at Boynton Methodist Church located in Houston, Texas. He retired from Cameron Iron Works as a foreman. George was very active with the union. He was also a longstanding and successful real estate investor.
George was an admired dancer throughout Houston – from the Eldorado Ballroom to the St. Regis Hotel – tap dancing, Waltzing and moonwalking – he could do it all. When not dancing he passed the time playing solitaire and spades on his computer, checking email (yes, he used email), watching westerns and sports on television. Every meal included onions, hot sauce, jalapeno peppers and an ice cold Coca Cola.
As a young adult George married Willie Ruth (deceased) and to this union one child was born, Tyrone Washington (deceased). In his early 30s George then married Dorothy Stucey and to this union two children were born – Kirk Wayne Washington (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and a young child who died at birth.
George was preceded in death by his parents and 14 siblings: Booker, Lillian, Alice, Creola, Candis, Clate, Mozerine, Therie, Narcissus, Janette, Frankie, Leon, Glen and Canahu. George is survived by his son: Kirk Washington; three grandchildren: Jason King (Leshonda), Myiesha Stephens (Eric) and Michael Semiens; two great-grandchildren: Erika and Landyn; first cousins: Emma Allen, Ethel Kirby, Anderson Boyd, Jr.; several cousins, nieces, nephews and other dear relatives; neighbors, friends, dance partners and co-workers.
His services will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 PM (viewing from 4:00 - 6:00 PM; service from 6:00 - 7:00 PM) on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at Bill Clair Family Mortuary (located at 2603 Southmore, Houston, Texas 77004). My husband and I had the good fortune to meet George at a party at the Rice Hotel many years ago. After my husbands death I had the pleasure of dancing a lot with George. Not only was he an excellent dancer, he was a wonderful gentleman who dressed impeccable. I truly loved George, as did many others. I miss you, George.

My good friend George. I will always remember you and your warm smile and strong handshake you always had for me. Here it is January 2022 and I just learned about your passing away and understandably so because I was preoccupied with my father also passed away at the same time your obituary was posted. I only hope that I can follow in your "dance steps" to make it to almost 102 years young.

My heart goes out to the family of this wonderful man. Thank you for sharing your memories.

George was so thoughtful ,loyal, kind, wise, funny and a great listener.

He brought so much joy to every person he met out and he never forgot a name or a face.

George made every room light up in every place he went. It was always fun to be around him!

I valued his friendship and all the time we spent together. He even called me after the Remington every week to make sure I got home safely.

I will miss him in my life!

My heartfelt grief goes out to the family of Mr. Washington who was a coworker of my father.
Upon the passing of my father, Mr. Washington put a donation in my hand. For I know that Mr. Washington has passed for death unto life because he had Love for the Brethren.
