Jack A. Berridge
1928-2022
Jack Berridge passed away peacefully on the morning of January 28, 2022 at his Lake McQueeney, Texas lakehouse.
March 28, 1928 would have been an ordinary day in Atchison, Kansas were it not for the birth of the extraordinary John Albert Berridge. Known throughout his life as "Jack," he grew up to live a life surrounded by love, dedicated to his passions, and marked by tremendous accomplishments.
He was predeceased by his mother, Alberta Theresa Koebrich, and his father, Guy Harold Berridge, his brothers Don and Bill, and his beloved wife, Carol, to whom he was married for forty blissful years prior to her untimely death. Unencumbered by the earthly bonds that are reluctantly discarded by individuals like Jack, who achieve so much in this world, he is now free to spend eternity with his lovely Carol.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Erin Berridge Gillum (Grant), and his three sons, Mark Jonathan Berridge (Helen), Patrick Kevin Berridge (Michelle), and Jason Eric Berridge (Jennifer).Jack is also survived by his eleven grandchildren, James Grant Gillum II (Jamie), Jeffrey Alexander Gillum, and John Berridge Gillum, Christopher Andrew Berridge, Matthew Herrmann Berridge, Luke Carroll Berridge, Samuel Joseph Berridge, Caroline Rene Berridge, John Warbritton Berridge, George McNulty Berridge and Emile Elise Berridge. Jack was also blessed with three great-grandchildren; James Grant Gillum III, Cameron Matthew Gillum, and Emma Mae Gillum. All of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss their beloved "Poppy."
God provides angels on both sides of the abyss to assist men in negotiating the journey when the time arrives. On this side of the abyss, Jack's family wishes to thank his many caregivers who were present with him for the final days with a special regard for Josephine Garcia for her many years of kind and loyal service to Jack and his household.
Jack's first passion in life was cars. He spent many days and nights on the dirt tracks of southern California entering, and sometimes winning, races sponsored by the Southern California Stock Car Association. His car racing career was interrupted by the manpower demands of the Korean War when Jack entered the Air Force Reserve and signed up for fighter pilot training. He did not abandon his love of racing however as he worked in pit crews of friends who sponsored race car teams at the conclusion of the war after he fulfilled his military obligation.
Jack was an Architectural Engineer by education who loved design and construction. To know Jack is to be aware of the passion he had for his vocation. He could design and build anything and was happiest when he was in the process of doing so. He received his education at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. While at "Cal Poly" Jack distinguished himself by winning a national bridge design competition with two classmates during their senior year. Years later, Jack was recognized by Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental Design as the 2012 Honored Alumnus. He created and funded the Berridge Manufacturing Company Materials Testing Laboratory at the College as part of his commitment to his alma mater. Jack's commitment to education was not limited to sponsoring labs at his alma mater. He was a generous benefactor for the San Antonio school where all of his grandchildren have attended, Saint Mary's Hall. He made sure that all of the children who attend that school have a good roof over their heads, not just his grandchildren. Such is the generosity of Jack Berridge.
Jack was widely and highly regarded in his industry and pursuit of business as well. Berridge Manufacturing Company is known throughout the world for its quality production of architectural roofing products. Berridge Manufacturing Company stands as one of the significant contributions to the world of commerce and entrepreneurship created by Jack. He was inducted as an Honoree into the 2016 Metal Construction Hall of Fame. His patents and product designs are also part of his legacy as they pay tribute to Jack's commitment to filling every minute with sixty seconds of production.
Despite the many honors and awards Jack received during his lifetime, they pale in comparison to the impact he had on the people with which he associated. From his immediate family to his many friends to the numerous employees and business associates whose lives he impacted by his intellect and work ethic, Jack's influence on the world has been enormous, and will be for years to come.
The family has decided not to have a formal Memorial Service at this time due to Covid. There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Jack's name to St. James Catholic Church, 510 S. Camp Street, Seguin, Texas 78155.
